Thanks very much for the photos, a real work of art and has lots of character. My bench when finished will look lean and mean, but will not have the personality of yours!
Ned
Thanks, Kent - what you described is exactly what I had in mind - one dog spacer at a time. Glad to know that it has held up well for decades.
Might you have a photo of this semi-treasure...
Thanks to all who have replied -- Jim, to be clear I'm not talking about having a thin apron, total thickness of what gets glued to the existing bench will be 2-5/8".
Will think on it some more,...
Having read a gazillion posts on workbenches, dogs, vices, etc, everything I've seen about creating square dog holes describes routing the holes in an apron strip, and gluing that "layer" along with...
I had to make this decision a few years ago - my shop is long, but narrow (just under 12 feet), and I opted for separate machines for jointer/planer (both SCM). I got 16" width in each, and I wanted...
Derek - I know you've blogged about side sharpening, wondering if that's the method you still use. I've not tried it yet, but will do so soon. Side sharpening might prove to be a useful method for...
Thanks, Derek --
You could be right about why the bend occurred, but have used this gauge very little up until now.
Will give things a try and report back --
Ned
As I thought, the top blade seems to be bent up slightly, causing the cutting edge to be a bit higher than the bottom blade, hence the scoring imbalance.
My poor man's feeler gauge of a piece of...
Thanks, Derek!
Will study what you wrote, thx much for the details --
When I used the gauge a couple of weeks ago, it seemed like the upper blade was scoring much lighter than the lower blade,...
Yeah, saw another post of Derek's while searching yesterday, and it's definitely the same make, Kinshiro. I'm in the same boat as you, mostly used machines, but having a strong interest in hand...
Thanks for confirming, David - lucky indeed!
I bought this gauge close to 15 years ago, don't remember what I spent, who made it, or where I got it from. Tried to use it a short while ago, and didn't have the greatest experience, probably...
Hi Tom,
I wish my shop was large enough to accomodate something like the photos you attached, but unfortunately it's not. I will have to get creating about how to store my setup wants it's...
I think part of my issue is that since the hollow grind is currently done without any jigs or fixtures, not only is the grind inconsistent, I think it goes too far back to the heel, if that's the...
Thanks, David --
I have a slow speed 1 HP Rikon Grinder with 80/180 square CBN wheels that I use to hollow grind.
My shop is uninsulated and unconditioned, and while I will be addressing...
Reading through other posts on SMC, seems that after using a Tormek/Work sharp, you still need to use stones, so that was obviously a misconception of mine. Hmmm
I have spent some time sharpening plane irons and chisels over the years, but historically have been much more of a machine-based woodworker. More recently have decided to study hand tools, and of...
Hi Tony,
Thanks for your reply, excellent information at those links --
Ned
Many thanks to everyone for replying!
Derek, thx much for your reply -- does your answer re: Japanese/Western change depending on the hardness of the wood?
Hi everyone,
Perhaps those with more experience than I can extoll the virtues of their favorite Japanese saws (and any specifics about them) for cutting tenon cheeks.
Thanks in advance --

Many thanks to all who replied!
Thanks, Derek! Knew you would have some solution for this, really appreciate you posting these photos.

Hi everyone --
If you had to transport a bunch of hand tools, what would be your preferred way to do it?
I'll be driving so it's more of a question of how best to prevent them from being...
