For me it's a fishtail chisel. I tend to cut more through dovetails than 1/2 blind, but when I do, the fishtail comes out.
As a side note, I wouldn’t consider Tools for Working Wood a “Large Company”…
I'm envious Joel. Have a great time and please report back your thoughts after the class.
I’m just guessing here, but I bet Rob is restating the specs from IBC. He should probably check a few batches, update the tolerances on his website, and then complain to IBC.
But just a guess on...
Ken, just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoy your YouTube videos. They are very entertaining and I always learn something. Ok, back to the topic at hand…
Really impressive John. I love shooting boards, but this takes it to an entire new level. Well done.
I was lucky to take a few classes from Mr. Cosman when he used to go around teaching and was in my area. I learned his techniques and practiced (a lot). He has thought through every little step and...
Love the interspersed houndstooth dovetails. Great job.
I'm a big fan of both their tools and the good people that work for them. I only wish they could find more of those good people and start producing their full catalog of tools. I have some money...
I use the shapton ceramics and I flatten every time I'm done sharpening something. But it's easy, just wet and rub the plate over the stones until they look like new. Only takes about 15 seconds...
The LN. I'm a bevel down guy and I much prefer the Bailey style adjuster over the Norris.
Same thing happened to me. They also told me to re-epoxy it. I won't buy another of their screwdrivers, although I do love their tools. On the other hand, if they have changed their design to...
Thanks for posting Tom. This is really interesting and your tips will come in very handy. Much appreciated.
Hello Bob,
I also was very intrigued last year concerning this tool and decided to make my own. I used the extras from a saw I had made so had the bit kicking around the shop. It's not the...
In my experience, there is little difference in practice. LN makes fantastic irons. I have O1, A2, and PMv11 in the shop from different makers and all do a great job. I do use shapton waterstones...
I've been using the Rob Cosman sharpening method for years after I took a class from him. Changed my woodworking. It's not hard to do at all, but does take a bit of practice. I think you'll be...
I just yell at my wire wheel. If it starts to cry, then I know. :D
I have found "Illustrated Cabinetmaking" by Bill Hylton to be a very useful book. It's essentially 365 pages of exploded furniture projects that give one a very good idea of how furniture is put...
I'm afraid that when I put the bits in the handle, they'll just fall everywhere :)
Hello Eli,
I would take some fine sandpaper to the edges of the LN plan bottom just to make sure there is nothing sharp there. Probably run the bottom over the same sandpaper lightly to knock of...
All good advice. Everyone learns differently. What turned my dovetails around was taking a dovetail class with Rob Cosman. He has a very scientific approach which registered with me. I’m sure he...
For your question #1, I would use Tru-Oil. One of my favorite finishes and, as a gun stock oil, I believe it holds up really well to hand use.
Michael
Thanks all. Brent's fan idea is really good. I'm leery of putting a large garbage bag over it as it might hurt evaporation. I could heat the large CI bed with a heat gun ever so slightly and then...
Hello all,
I just picked up an old Makita 2040 planer that is in great shape, but it's been sitting in in an unheated garage for about a week (temp ~ 35F).
I know when I bring it inside in a...
