The hole goes down about 1 inch. I held one end in 4 jaw chuck and used the tail stock to hold the other end. That way there is no horizontal pressure on the piece you are turning. I tried it between...

I visited the granddaughter of a former local woodturner and was shown through her collection of his work. I was inspired to turn a "Weed Vase" as he called them. It is black walnut, 9" tall with a...
Don't worry Toby, As a member of Lancaster Area Woodturners and your home club, I know the guys will like it.

I finished off this Willow Hollow Form after the burl had been sitting around for a while. I was really happy to see the splaying. The piece is 14" diameter and 9"tall with a satin polyurethane...
Beautiful work. Malcolm Tibbets might even be impressed!
looks like you have a wonderful tree that will give you a lot of beautiful turnings for some time to come. Have fun!
I turned it over 2 days. The back first and then the front. Since the wood was quite dry to start with, it didm't warp much. Now that it is finished, it does change shape with the humidity changes.
Maybe a different angle of photo would show the platter form better. I agree that the top down picture doesn't really show form very well
A guy in our woodturning club was retiring from business so he sold me several pieces that are 30" wide that were targeted for countertops. I still have 2 pieces that are about 6' long but have...
I turned it outboard on a Powermatic 3520B.
I just finished of this 29" figured walnut platter it a continuous curve about 1" deep in the center. Started off with a 2" thick plank. It is finished with satin polyurethane. It was a bit big for...
Have you ever noticed that your partner is generally more concerned about the blood rushing out of your body than you are?
Yes, It was all power carved freehand before inlaying
I finished off this 16" diameter cemented platter made from purple heart and figured maple. I adapted the braided heart design ftp a Celtic Knot pattern I found in my library of woodworking books.
I alternate between the 2 or 3 inch diameter pad sander on my drill and straight sand paper. That way as I step up to the next level of grit sandpaper you can see that all the lines of the courser...
It is sort of dished with flat section in the middle with no real foot as such. I just put a gentle negative seep on the bottom to about 11/2 the diameter to make it a bit usable. Any suggestions...
This platter is too big for my photo booth so I took it on the lawn. It is the largest I can make on my lathe without going to the outboard set-up. 19 1/2" with a Carnuba wax polish over minwax...
I went to a Jimmy Clewes demo last week at the Sesquahana Woodturners Club and got inspired to try out winged bowls. I had a bunch of exotic wood bowl blanks that I picked at Middletown Lumber a...
Brian,
A beautiful gift. Peace be with you and your friend on this journey. The symbolism is perfect.
Nice work Dennis. I was wondering, it is hard to get a size perspective with your pictures. How big are you pieces?
Good job. Keep this one safe so you can compare it to the ever more complex ones to come.
Very nice work. I like the contrast of the sapwood with the burl.
excellent work. I especially like the shape of the walnut piece
I have been practicing with thinner plotters recently. This English Walnut platter is 1/8" thick 16" diameter with about 1/2" shallow curve into the center. Finished with Danish Oil.288964
That's really cool.
