I am looking at the Rikon Slow speed grinders as part of my sharpening system w CBN wheels at the recomendation of a friend.
How superior is the 1HP model to the 1/2 HP ? Is it worth the extra...
So I watched a YouTube video telling me not to use a spindle gouge on a bowl - for roughing. The video explained the dangers which I Will heed !
So.... I realize that while my hardened steel tools...
Great design. I must make one. However I have one question. After the plate is in the chuck you say to hit the wood with a hammer to set it on the screws. Are you striking the wood with a downward...
Yes. Soap will not be left in the dish.
I made my 1st real item on my used Jet 1236 lathe today. A shaving cream dish. Since it will get wet daily, I'd like a finish that will deal with moisture well.
The dish is made of cherry. I love...
Great input everyone. I ordered my chuck last night - arrives Weds. Went w SN2 (insert style) w the 2 inch jaws.
Definately need to look into those vacuum jaws !
Ok. So I think I will abandon the big kiss t idea w a Cole jaw. The Cole jaw is too big at 12 inches to rise above my lathe bed anyways so I could only use it when I turn the head and from what you...
So it looks like I will go w the SN2. Am I hearing that since I should avoid turning really large bowls, maybe I just skip the package w the Cole jaw (if it makes $$$ sense) and add one later as/if...
Thank you. Someone warned me that the weight of the SN2 may put too much stress on the ball bearings wearing them out quickly. Sound right to you ?
The SN2 Bowl Bundle comes w a larger Cole jaw. I...
I am looking at the Nova G3 Bowl Bundle vs Supernova 2 bowl bundle. I understand I need a 1 inch/8TPI fitting.
Is the Supernova2 to big for this jet w a 12 inch swing but ability to turn larger...
Dale,
I am in Califon, NJ.
Will gove ot a shot - thanks for the help guys. As a newby I am sure I'l have 100 questions...
Richard, thanks for the insight - that said, I misunderstood the issue. The spur center was not loose. The barbs in the wood just seemed to scratch free of the wood break the wood so it began to spin...
When turning my first spindle i noticed that the spur center will stop rotating w the spindle. Can I assume it needs to be locked in place ? how do I do so ?
Thanks
Allen
I hear you and will take your advice. I tried the roughing gouge today and it was reasonable to use. I have no idea if/how sharp it is by lathe standards.
Now I need to read up and learn how to...
Ok guys. First I want to thank everyone for their insight. I did some more reading and while I found the lathe may have it's issues, it's not a bad device and frankly I am not a skilled Turner.
...
Thanks guys for the advice. I think I will take it advice and pass.
Walter,
would you suggest a lathe like this or a table top Jet 1221, Nova Comet ii or Rikon 220VSR ?
I never did this before and dont want to buy the wrong lathe !
Allen
I need some advice - I can by a Jet 1236 lathe w the stand and basic tools for $400. it has some rust on the handles but the guy says it works.
Decent value ?
reasonably good for bowls ? one...
Say more about the rikon swing. These are used machines at those prices.
I have an appt to buy a Nova Comet II, Tabletop Jet or large General 160 lathe. All 12 inch swing.
Prices are within approx 100 dollars ranging from 300-400.
Opinions please !
Thanks to you all for the advice. Pls see my new ask on the Nova Comet II.
I found a Nova Comet II Lathe for sale. It's the previous model (no digital readout). The guy is asking $300 with the accessories that came w it + a single carbide blade (hollow blade?) And a few...
I would love me to be able to do bowls and vases. To go large seems appealing but I'm not sure what large items I would make. Don't know how the old cast iron units will perform next to the newer...
