My first response is this is red elm because I have use a lot of it before. Another wood it could be is Big Leaf Maple from out west.

All I can say is WOW Just WOW. How many hours did it take for carving and for painting?

First thing you should do is find out if there is a turning club where you live. They can help you in so many ways we could not.

All I can think of is the bowl was getting hot. I had that happen a few times when sanding.

I also have the Bionix face shied and I would rather have the bubble one. It has more room in front and still blocks shavings.

1 & 2 are my first salad bowl for my daughter and it is made of Cherry and the finish is wipe on poly 15 coats and in between every 5 coats I buffed it out.

PS - It looks like that lathe can have inserts under the headstock and tail stock to raise it up for a higher swing.
