John:
I was told by Target Coatings that water could soften the water borne finish and to never use mineral spirits on EM6000. Was told to either sand it dry or use mineral oil very sparingly.

Jim:
The finish I get "off the gun" isn't acceptable (dust nibs, I guess). I sand with a series of micro mesh sanding pads and mineral oil (was told not to use water or mineral spirits) until I get...
For those of you that spray Target's Coatings EM6000, could you describe your "handrubbing" process and what you use? I'm still in my "experimental" phase and trying to figure out the best way.
As a wood carver, I'd like to know the percentage of moisture in the basswood boards I use. I'm told that 12% is good for chip carving. So, I began my shopping for a moisture meter. I am amazed at...
When I spoke to Rust-Oleum customer service, they said the only difference was the "wood" sealer has lower VOC's the the "sanding" sealer. Hmm!
Can anyone tell me the difference between Zinsser Bullseye shellac universal "sanding" sealer (854) and universal "wood" sealer (824 H) ?
Thank you, Robert.
I was thinking of applying a thin coat of shellac as a barrier coat but wasn't sure if that was the right answer. A 2lb. cut with denatured alcohol to 1:1 ratio?
Can anyone tell me if General Finishes dye stains has the tendency to bleed into a top coat of Target's EM 6000 acrylic lacquer? Thanks
There is a trick to it. It took me several tries to get it...... but once you "get it" , it's easy. I just followed the direction to the letter and all of a sudden, it worked. Keep trying!
Has anyone read the book "The Art of Coloring Wood" by Brian Miller?
Just wondering if it would be a good read. Looking for options!
Yes, my shop is heated. I just wasn't sure if the temperature drop from opening windows would have an effect on the finish. Thank you for you input.
So if I'm spraying during the winter months, won't the cold air from "open window" ventilation cause spraying issues? Or do I open windows once the spraying is complete?
No matter how I "fix my working conditions", it means spraying nitro in the basement during the colder months and spending some serious money to do it safely (due to lack of space). I'm not sure I...
I currently spray my small projects (hand- carved serving trays) with nitrocellulose lacquer from a can (Deft). I spray this over General Finishes water soluble dye stains. I set up a portable spray...
I need advice. I am a chip carver and I make chip carved serving trays. The finish I use is three coats of sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer. I then sand that with 400 grit sandpaper. I finish that with...
Is it nessesary to use a pre-conditioner to control blotching if using a water soluble dye stain or is it primarily intended for pigmented stains? My projects are made with basswood and eastern white...
Marc:
My volume is definitely low. I spray average one to two trays a week. I'm very happy with the results I get using aerosol nitro, I just didn't know if using HVLP would be more cost effective...
Thanks Wayne:
I do like the results I get. But I'm open to other options.
John: What would you recommend for a water based topcoat?
And what method of application?
I need an expert opinion. I make hand carved serving trays out of basswood and Eastern white pine. I use GF dye stains to color my trays. I then spray them with four coats of Deft
(nitrocellulose)...
