Oh yeah, 100% on it being walnut. Smell, feel, black stained fingers (hello lemons) rust all over everything :) Plus some parts of the tree look like normal walnut. The bowls look a bit different...

    Crotchety Pecan Bowl

Howdy. Here is a piece of pecan crotch wood I finished up yesterday. Sanded to 320 and then buffed with red, no white diamond. Ren wax.

Oh yeah, the finish. It's sanded to 220, then wet sanded BLO and 320 to fill pores. After that I buffed it with clean paper towels until they didn't come away with junk on them anymore.

Thanks everyone. Donny, it's actually crushed malachite so it is pretty "hard" :) But really it's just a matter of patience to get it sanded down to level initially. After that it sands up through...

Walnut Bowl with Malachite Rim Inlay

Finished this today. Every time I turn walnut I'm reminded of how it seems more difficult than the lighter colored woods to get a good final surface. Guess the brown really shows everything.

I use 80 grit hook and loop on a 6" Bosch random orbit that has an aggressive mode setting. This works, but it isn't incredibly fast. I've done turquoise with this method, the only other mineral...

I don't think my work is anything special yet, being pretty new to turning all told. I've not sold a bowl for less than $30 yet, no matter how small. Less than that and it simply isn't worth it to...

Thanks. It does seem to have characteristics of several woods. Chinese or American, it's a decent turning wood. The finish is sanded to 220 and Mahooneys Walnut finish. I didn't buff this one, simply...

    Chestnut Bowl

Some time back, a few might possibly remember I fished a small section of chestnut from a burn pile. It was charred pretty deep, 1/2". Have no way of telling if it is American Chestnut personally....

Hm. I've tried forstners in end grain with very slow and hot results. I have a whole set of them, and several carbide bits for the ones I use most often. That and an extension would work fine for...
  15. Will masonry bits work for drilling the center of hollow forms?

It seems like the cheapest and quickest option for me is to grab one of those big masonry bits from Lowes or wherever to drill deep into longer blanks. Just wondered if anyone has used them. Other...

    Bradford Pear...Gourd Jug Thing?

Was going to buff this up as per usual procedure but I like the way it feels at 220 grit with some BLO. Very gourdy. Had a few cracks open up while hollowing. Filled them with malachite but they...

It does look like some supposed Mimosa I had. If it is, that stuff really disagreed with my sinuses, even turning green with no real dust. It was like a wimpy version of pepper spray.

    Cedar Bowl with malachite fill

Had two cedar rough outs, I think the other one is trashed because the bottom is cracked pretty deeply. Can't tell for sure until I cut into it though. This is my first cedar bowl, not terrible stuff...

Thank you everyone for the comments. I'm starting to think the bead foot is a good compromise between a straight shot to the surface the bowl is on and something more elaborate. In any case, I'll...

    Walnut Winged Bowl

Roughed this out awhile ago. Decided midway through returning it I wanted it to sort of ripple on the wings and started toward that goal. Didn't really work out. I guess they can't all be winners....

Thanks for the rundown on the butterfly process. I'd thought of trying the template and Whiteside inlay kit before but the fixturing seemed daunting enough that I thought it wouldn't work.
