Yep, it is probably a sanding disk. It has all sorts of glue on it and weighs the right amount for it to be aluminum. No holes either.

Definitely. After building a RepRap 3D printer from scratch, I have a much greater understanding of the simple things- the benefits of a rigid construction, lubricants, threadlocker... and techniques...
