Gardening and Grafting.
Welcome! I can't see the name well but try and see if you can take a rubbing. I've had luck doing this before. It does look handmade and with the brass I'd say its 1800's.

Why does it need to be non ferrous? Would steel/ iron react to something?

Thats a nice looking chisel! I hope it works every bit as good as it looks or even better for you. Also, a little off topic but what's the wood your hammer handle is made of? Buloke? Its beautiful!
I've got one too that I can't ID. Any guesses? The readable portion of the punched makers mark on the plane (also the only mark on the plane) reads as "...........K Tool Co. Warranted Cast Steel" I...
It looks like it! It's a little far for me though!
Actually just found some birds eye maple in the orange boxstore but didn't get any. Small eyes and expensive for what it was.
Or maybe use punctuation? In all seriousness, welcome!
Brian I believe Raye was saying that he donated and then he was able to see the pictures. I think it should have been written as NEVER MIND, THE DONATION LET ME INSTANTLY VIEW PICS
the key being...
Thanks. That makes me feel good that someone other than my family said it looked decent. I tried my best as it was for my dad for his Masonic things, many passed down for generations.
It wasn't very large but marble is very heavy (the top was probably close to 100-150lbs). It really depend on the machine the legs came from. Some can be pretty frail looking and some are pretty...
Thanks Jim,
I actually had looked at that! I was thinking that might have been it when it turned into Charles Buck Edge Tool Co but I can't find a punch mark that looks even remotely similar. I have...
Doug, If you can get ahold of an old sewing table cheep you can use the cast legs without a problem. I work with stone and we had a customer come in with the legs of one and asked us to make a desk...

Thanks! Best part is they are in plain sight. If you look close your see them as little black specks. They are very small headless finishing nails.
I tried to rotate but couldn't figure out how. As for the nails, if you look closely you'll see very small black specks. They are very small headless finishing nails so you don't see them much. The...
Good job and congrats! Not quite there yet. My best build so far uses nails. (that probably made a few of you cringe:rolleyes:)
Thanks Charlie, good to know. Thats a nice build! Have you had any issues with the butternut being easily dented? I have some but am scared to use it because of how soft it seems.
When I cut it down (with a bow saw because I had no interest in lugging a chainsaw up a hill with a 30 degree incline: turns out lugging the chainsaw would have been 1/16 of the effort then using the...
Still working on the paperwork. Have to wait until they leaf out to send samples for genetic verification. Some may ask if there was an old settlement that it could have been from and or been...
I've been in contact with a Professor at University of New England for their School of Marine and Environmental Programs and gene conservation chair and the Vice Pres. of the Maine Chapter. There are...
It is. European chestnut and Chinese Chestnut are blight resistant so haven't been hit like American Chestnut has been.
It is American chestnut and I have been in contact with ACF. The big tree in the pictures is still there and healthy but because there is no longer a pollinator the nuts arn't viable. There are...
Has anyone worked with American chestnut? I cut one down (it had died) and am having it milled. Whats its workability? I would have saved the wood anyway because while you can still find pockets of...
Ouch! I can only imagine how bad that hurt.
