Thanks, I was leaning towards a 16 but this picture:

Makes me rethink that. The rear handle appears raised and the brass knob appears to have no knurling.
I found this at an antique mall. The cutting iron seems to be a bit bent but I don't think it will effect the plane once it is secured in the plane. Can some one help me identify it? I have gone...
I vote for a new fence. Unless your buying new, your next saw will need one too.
The guard has me stumped. It seems to be a combination of aluminum and some sort of wood. It is painted well so it is hard to tell.
I found it on Craigslist. I paid $250 for it. The last owner bought it and restored it, then found a wood/metal version and decided to sell this.
Haha this one is definitely getting used. I have an old Delta riser block on the way. I process a lot a firewood on my saw so the extra height will come in extremely handy.
I just picked this guy up and thought I would show it off::

Sorry to bring this back up 13 years later. I know there are other threads discussing this, but this is the first google result.
For any one that finds this please note that none of these...
Thanks everyone, that is what I needed. I am going to pass on this one.
I was browsing an antique store on my lunch today and I ran across this plane. I have a couple this size so I don't want to grab it unless it is something special. I think I have it dated as a 16 but...
That is a good deal for that package. We never see that kind of stuff around here.
Yeah a finger joint/ box joint jig is how I started. This piece is 11 and 13/16ths long with 15/32nds on each end and between each dado and there are 8 dados. So my thought is that I could make the...
I think maybe instead of having the spacer 15/32nds from the closest edge of the blade, maybe I should have the spacer in my jig set at 45/32nds from the outside of the blade. that would get my first...

Hopefully this picture expains what I am trying to do. Each bar has 8 evenly spaced cuts. I have 20 of...
I have plumbed most of my small shop but I share a 6" flex line between my planer and drum sander. The heavy duty flex line is heavy and hard to handle and it won't stay on the machine. The only...
I finally finished up my lathe table that I have been working on. This was some rough sawn soft wood. It was probably not worth all the effort but it was fun to take something so pitifully ugly and...
by far the most reliable I have ever used.

I don't have a bench, and I wont have a bench until I have a bigger shop. My first project after getting my table saw was building this outfeed table:

Thanks for the info Steven. The asking price for the Shipleigh is 80 or 90 bucks. I am not even considering that one. I am minorly interested in the sargent though. Are there any websites out there...

I picked up this No. 5 yesterday. Seems like it is in pretty decent shape for...
I would invest in a planer, jointer and a tablesaw right off the bat. I picked up an 8 wallace jointer and a 12 inch powermatic planer for $750. Both machines needed a tuneup but they run great after...
The FWW article that did the test also showed that plain old wd40 was almost as good. I scrub all my CI down with wd40 and wipe them dry. Then I coat them all with johnson wax. I reaply the wax every...
