Stevie, are the last two pictures of a (your?) bench top dressed with a toothed blade? The shavings look similar to those created when those tools are used.
using a toothed blade or veneer glue prep blade will do the same thing...reduce tear out on figured wood.
What about tung oil? Does it also prevent significant fading like the BLO?
I have the low angle bevel up shave from LV...my first spokeshave. I have conventional ones now as well and the bevel up shave is my favourite...maybe because I learned how to "shave" with it first!
Yup that's what I do as well. Some softer woods are a little tricky sometimes if they aren't perfectly smooth. The blade can grab if you don't watch carefully.
