Just get a mild steel cut off wheel for your 4.5” grinder. It shouldn’t be more than 4 or 5 dollars at your local hardware store. One should be plenty for that job. I would just use the Makita you...
I would probably just use a hatchet to get the bulk out and then fine tune it with a chisel.
You can easily cut that sheet metal up with some compound tin snips.
The Handplane Book by Garrett Hack is a good place to start. I quit using belt sanders years ago. I’m not saying a hand plane is better I just personally prefer them over belt sanders or any sanders...
I tried those Schmidt’s from TSC. I wanted to like them but they just don’t hold up for what I do. I do a lot of metal farbrication/welding and farm work and I get a year out of them if I’m lucky. I...
I never noticed a downside back when I used water stones. I flattened everything with a diamond plate to include a Shapton 8000.
You might want to look into cut off wheels for grinders if you could rig up a way to make the cut. You can get some really thin wheels for those.
Thanks Joe. The scabbards are a great idea. He already is in 4h, we just have to wait until he is a little older to participate in more events. He did a good job on that knife, especially for a 16...
Have you tried a different chisel or iron in the jig? If those come out fine than at least the jig should be ok.
Thanks everyone! I do enjoy making things with him. Thanks for your help Lee it’s much appreciated!
I’m sorry about the pictures. I can’t figure out how to rotate them!
My son asked if he could have a sword so I thought we could have some fun making one. He seems to enjoy woodworking so far and I thought he would appreciate a sword he made a little better than a...
Hi Ron,
I own a 07 Camry and I put about a quart every two weeks in it. I have owned it since 07 and it has always been like this. I even took it to the dealer once and they tested it and told me...
Personally I would build a freestanding deck with a walkway that goes right up the doors, but not connected to the house with a ledger board. Maybe put the main deck 4' off of the house with a...
Carlisle, PA to visit my family, then down to Gaithersburg, MD to visit my inlaws. After that it's off to Harisonburg, VA or somewhere near there to live. I'm starting a new job in Harrisonburg this...
Thanks Brian. I will give going straight through a shot. I've seen that in other cities where avouding the bypass is actually quicker.
I start my move to the east coast tomorrow and will be traveling on I-70 for a large portion of the trip. Basically from St Louis to Pittsburgh and then I-76 from there, but I don't usually have any...
As my Dad would say, that is some good character building. I look forward to seeing the completion.
Salt water would be my first guess.
Of all the old planes I have there has been only one that I considered the iron too far gone to replace. It was very badly pitted right on the non bevel side. The rest of them all required some...
PM-V11....the word on the street is that it can do most anything.:)
Nice job on the chest Bryan. What made you go with half blind dovetails on the base?
For me, I like being able to just grab my iron or chisel and just put it the stone without messing around with a jig of some sort. The final straw for jigs with me was a narrow chisel that kept...
Both my Dad and myself have been using Michelins for years without any problems at all. I haven't seen a decline in quality. I have a set on my car and a set on my half ton pickup. They are the...
