Good work.
From what I can see, you first posted on a Thursday, and by Saturday you were taking advice to heart and thanking people.
That's quick.
Consider putting some of the money you have...
Thanks, all.
Feedback much appreciated. Sticking w/ 30 gal.
Thanks, John. Good point.
Sawdust does build up awfully quickly....
Will just stick with the 30 Gal.
Thanks, saw the 5 Gal., but that's for 2.5 hose.
I have a 4" dc system and don't want to reduce and lose cfm.
I just bought the Woodcraft 4" dust separator, and wonder how large the collection can/box needs to be. I checked Phil Thien's site, too - don't see this addressed.
I set up the lid with a 30 gal....
I started using it about 6 months ago, and am very happy with the results. Seems to hold up well. Have also used a mixture of 1/3 FeednWax, 1/3 BLO, and 1/3 varnish that I like.
I used to use a lot of white pine on hollow-body decoys. Works quite well if it is good clear pine that's truly dry. But I always bought from a local sawmill. Once they knew what I was looking for it...
The main thing I find necessary is to cut the first coat at least a bit with mineral spirits.
I would not heat it!
Thank you for the tip on the joinery book. Found an electronic copy - amazing drawings and detail.
Neal,
Thanks for all that detailed info.Exactly what I was looking for. Hadn't thought of the "sticking" issue but a very good point.
I'll certainly paint the outside sills, and perhaps the...
Just old-fashioned single pane.
Mostly worried about the bottom rail and the outside sill, where the heaviest water flow is.
I'm making sash windows out of old-growth cypress, and wonder about the best finish for those, and for the sills. I'm in N. Florida - extreme heat and humidity.
Had been thinking of Poly until I...
I also hesitated to buy a Mortise Pal because of cost but am quite happy with the purchase. It's very well made and works great. Seems like it will last me a lifetime. I didn't find anything else as...
btw, beautiful saw!
Thanks, Neal. That's exactly what I wondered.
I'm going to stick with TB3.
Thanks, that's a good site.
Does any of the above advice change if using something like Gorilla Glue, which expands? I'm making some M&T window sash and had been thinking of using the Gorilla, instead of Titebond 3.
I had the same issue back in June and bought the 690 instead of waiting.
Very happy with it, but also sounds like the dust collection on the new 1023 series is a big improvement.
I think many are...
Cypress takes paint just fine.
What Howie said.
Outside, covered, w/good air flow.
Wouldn't worry too much about ants - but raise it high enough off the ground so it won't be easy pickings for termites.
Cypress is resistant to weather/rot, many say the same about cedar.
I've seen some beautiful Western Red Cedar.
I use cypress a lot, but I think either would look great.
The bare cypress will weather to a nice gray.
Shouldn't be a problem other than that.
I'd keep it out of heavy rain, if you can.
I have the 690.
Both the riving knife and the splitter move with the blade.
Very easy to change between the two, btw.
I like that about the saw.
It does look like the dust collection on the new model is an improvement....
A few months ago I asked a Grizzly tech if there were any major differences in performance between the two fences (690/...
