Thank you Derek. I have a pair of these that I use. The are indeed invaluable with lots of metal knobs and such around the shop. I use it now on the Veritas Small Plow, I was just surprised to...
I'll offer a contrary view to Mike's. I did what he suggested my first time filing. The saw was not all that bad but there were several places that needed the teeth resized/reshaped. The first...
I am with Derek and Patrick Leach on not wanting a 55. The Veritas is the very clear winner there. You may also consider a vintage Record 043. It is a small plane and dead simple to setup and...
Thanks Derek! I could have used that back bevel idea a few days ago plowing a groove into Padauk against the grain. I did not think of that, nor knifing the walls, until it was far too late. ...
I suffer from depression and often have trouble getting into the shop even though I usually enjoy the time I spend there. One thing that has helped me is to just decide to spend five minutes in...
Happy New Year Aaron! I am not at home to look at the type 4 examples that I have, but it sounds like one to me. If you want to get type correct pieces for it, you can try Michael Jenks (and perhaps...
The only thing that I will add is to consider getting a CBN wheel for the grinder. They stay cooler than the stones, reducing the risk of burning the chisel, and cut quickly. I've upgraded to one...
I have some of the Suizan saws from Amazon. They are decent for the price. The teeth are finer than Western saws so they cut a bit slowly. If you accept that and don't try and rush it, they do a...
If anyone is interested in a (probably) better set see:

I have the coarsest Atoma plate and love it. It cuts fasts and does not degrade quickly like some other ones (DMT in particular, I have a dead one of those). If you go for diamonds, go for Atoma.

They have a weekly auction with good prices, lowest possible shipping, and reliable sellers. I joined...
I got myself a $1,000 gift card. I am certain that I will be buying that much anyway. Other than the 20tpi dovetail saw there was nothing else of interest to me.
I might just steal that idea!
I've used DMT, maybe some others. Now I am a big fan of Atoma. LV and Amazon carry then, I don't know who else.
I am not aware of any cure for Tool Acquisition Disorder. If you find one, let us know!
I'd contact customer service. The sale clearly stated that none of the imperfections affected functionality. Perhaps one of the functionally imperfect soles got placed in the wrong pile and not...
Have you considered a on-line course, such as Shannon Roger's Handtool School? It is an economical alternative to in-person learning at only $380 for a year. I have not signed up yet but will soon.
Might be from East Germany? That would explain the lack of references.
You must be able to find float glass. I think that all glass now is float glass unless you are buying special textured glass. I just got a 3mm pane of glass to replace a garage window. It was...
They are pre-packaged as a unit, the files come in the roll sealed up in a plastic bag. I just had a set delivered last week after a time on back order. They might be focusing on filling the back...
It is the same, or worse, going the other way. Shipping was more reasonable a few years ago. This has really put a damper on my eBay sales. Meanwhile, packages under a kilo from China are...
