Pete,
I guess that's why we say YMMV.
As you know the other two sets also clamp the saw plate before the hammer sets the tooth, so there's no magic there.

Pete,

The Triumph and the Eclipse 77 also grip the saw before the hammer sets the teeth. Triumph 280 hammer and early eclipse 77 hammers are simiar in size to the 42X. Later Eclipse or bigger Triumph...
It's funny how these theories get propagated. "The Stanley 42X" is the ONLY one to get! Everyone believes it, and prices skyrocket.
I have a 42X and a 77, a few Taintor #7s, a Disston Triumph. ...
I have a complete set of type 6 Bedrocks, #2 through #8 so I'm not really a Bailey man, but of all the Bailey types, I prefer the wartime models, the casting is way thicker than the peace time types....
I stopped buying FWW at around 225, still have them from #1 (bought the first 80 or so off ebay) and prefer physical magazines vs CDs. I tried PWW for a couple of years and thought it quite good but...
Tom, You don't like the method shown in the Langdon manual where they reverse the end brackets and use them to support the crown molding?
SDS is definitely better, but I'm willing to bet this Makita non SDS will be better than the Horror Fright hammer drill I own.
The Skil 77 is a type 15, around 1980 vintage.
The skil "sawzall"...
Mike,
It varies. People seem to ask more for the Langdons than the Stanleys, I've seen them at $10 but pretty rough. Usually $50 is the going rate, but then gas is over $4 a gallon here. The bay...
I don't really need any of these tools, they are pretty old but all are fully functional and for $100 for SEVEN power tools plus a bunch of drill bits etc I couldn't resist.
The big Makita sander...
I already have three good Stanley Miter boxes and a Marsh picture frame unit, plus a fourth for spare parts but I came across this MF Langdon box and for $50 couldn't resist it. It needs a good...
John,
I think I'm going to keep it.
The stone grader arrived from Amazon and I got to work after watching a few videos, including the one that came with it and so far I'm impressed! I haven't...
I've had a Makita horizontal wet wheel machine for many years now, with 220, 1000 and 4000 grit wheels. Always fancied the Tormek, but they are kinda pricey.
Well, yesterday I sold a Morris...
Well, the good news is: Norm made just about everything you could possibly make out of wood, so he had nothing left to give!
I bought a new Grizzly cabinet saw probably 20 years ago, it's long gone BUT its 3hp taiwan made motor ran stronger and just as smoothly as any of the unisaw or PM66s (four in total) I've had....
I don't understand how that can be considered an upgrade? Unless you are accident prone, in which case woodworking is not the hobby for you.
Hmmm, I have every flat top bedrock from 602 to 608 with many duplicates. Collecting is a disease which in my case took away from actually using! I also have a Norris disease with must be 40 or 50...
Hmmmm, fine Corinthian columns.
I have the Inca also and run it strictly as a jointer, I use a Dewalt planer for planing tasks, this works out well for me.
Ha Ha, Yes. I think i'm going to work up to it. I have some blued shim stock which I am going to mark up and practice on first - with maybe 5 or 6 ppi? After that I intend to just sharpen a few...
Ron, Lowell, Jim - thanks! Many good ideas. I think I ma going to draw the line, clamp the blade between two straight planks and progressively file down and "retooth" as you have suggested. The...
Lowell, retoothing might be a bit adventurous for me at this stage of my saw sharpening experience.
Jim, I have no problem running the jointer the whole length of the saw, trouble is unless the...
Ugh, I must be nuts, I already have a 2246A and a 358A miter box, (and a Marsh picture frame box) but they don't have the olde worlde charm of the earlier non "A" models with their fancy stock stop...
Bandsawbladesdirect are anything but fast in my experience. Prices are ok, and you do get the product safely, but fast they ain't. For me, over three orders it usually takes them 4 or 5 days to...
There's a dj20 on San Francisco bay area C.L. right now for $580. Looks in great condition.
Wow, seriously?
