So, I have been working on this bookcase for a while when I get time. The design calls for removable shelves except for the bottom fixed shelf. During a dry-fit I noticed a slight "wow" over the...
Resurrecting this thread. A friend recently told me about this build and I have been binge-watching the videos. Just getting to the deck trim and internal fitting. I saw some sneak peaks where it...
Thanks again Rob. The links are very helpful. Now I need to finish making the piece and will figure out my finishing steps.
Thanks John. Appreciate the input.
Very Nice Glenn. Inspirational as always.
Thanks all. I am getting ready to pull the trigger on the components to use Jeff Jewitt's methodology for finishing this piece. I have read a lot of posts and I see where spraying the dye is...
Thanks Rob - my original thought was to fume the thing. I am however, concerned about the variation in color given the wood I have in the piece. I have never done fuming but have researched a fair...
I am building this bookcase, which is a Stickley No. 700 replica. I will be aiming for an "Aurora" type finish. I am considering using transtint dye followed with gel stain per Jeff Jewitt's...
I would imagine it depends on what you plan to use the table for to some extent. How about building a torsion box?
Thanks Glenn. I agree dead flat is ideal.
Now I just need the shop to get a little warmer so I can fire up the DC (in adjacent unheated garage) and start sanding some panels.
Thank Jim and Michael. Yeah, I am also doing cleanup before mortising and assembly. I am a ways out before assembly, however. Making progress is the main thing, right? Minus 30 something...
Made friends with my SuperMax 16-32 today.
Bought this thing last year and played with it a bit. Into a furniture project now with quite a few QSWO panels I wanted to finish sand with the drum...
I haven't messed with the rollers, either upper or lower. I was having some snipe issues recently - checked the bed rollers as part of my investigation and they were flush. I cleaned the tables and...
I have the same planer and the same thump. A little disconcerting but you will get used to it. My bed rollers are flush with the bed and tables.
I have what I believe is the same drill press and it has served me well. Lowes has a new Skil 6.2 amp drill press right now for $200.
Ditto - glad you got it solved. Just fired up Thick as a Brick in the shop.
Elegant. Nicely done.
Very nicely done. That is a beautiful piece and the cherry top looks really nice with the painted cabinet.
Brian and Mark, thank you both for your input. I will break out the checkbook. As a percentage, the "show" pieces relative to the total needed are probably in the realm of 50%, although this is...
Yes, Maurice - that is the critter, although a little red for my taste/plan. My supplier has 1,000BF of 4/4 in stock, and I have had pretty good luck with them in the past; wish me luck. Thanks for...
Thanks George and Paul. Yes QSWO which is pretty spendy in my neck of the woods. Trying to balance between being a cheapskate and getting what I need.:D
I will probably err on the heavy side to...
Thanks Mark. That is helpful. I should have mentioned I will be buying rough stock. I will be able to sort through the wood. I stopped by the supplier yesterday to see what they had. They had...
I am planning to build a replica of Stickley's No. 700 bookcase. It is a relatively simple design, and I am using Robert Lang's book with shop drawings for the bookcase. I did a neatline...
I used self-tappers and then wrapped the joints with aluminized tape. That has worked well. I was able to buy spiral metal pipe locally at a wholesaler. Do you know anyone that is in the HVAC or...
