This was done on a Universal Laser System (ULS) M300 model 45 watt laser engraver using a rotary fixture. I just laid out the pattern in Corel draw and 'printed' it on. peace.
Yikes. I hope there wasn't an OUCH associated with that last statement.
I agree that working late is unproductive for important stuff. However, where there is artwork involved, I find working on...
where'd all the replys go?
LOL!!!!!!!
Yikes. The engravers worst nightmare.
I do pens for several people - most of them exotic hardwoods and expensive. I always worry I'm gonna mispell a name. I make triple sure it is...
Well I turn on a OneWay 1018 lathe, so my maximum diameter is 10 inches. This vase is tall, about 14-16 inches. The diameter at the top was about 7.5 inches. I tend to do hollow vessels and boxes,...
thanks for the kind words. Engraving is like woodworking/woodturning in that we do a lot of the same things over and over. Unfortuantely we don't always get to try all the neat 'features' in the...
ah good question. Well the vase has a slight curve to it, but for the most part there is a definite flat taper to it. I raised one end of the rotary fixture so that the majority of the engraved area...
That was a LOT of work in photoshop. I can't remember the exact source of the motif, but I think I scanned it from a book. Then it was a matter of lightening and darkening areas before converting it...
Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and the kind words.

Mine is a Universal Laser Systems M300 model 45 watt. you can see what it looks like at www.ulsinc.com. Not very portable. I have the rotary fixture and the honeycomb table accessories to go with...
Thanks for the kind words. It was mounted on the rotary fixture.
You layout the basketweave as a block (longer than needed). This is done in corel draw which has a postscript fill for a...
Thanks Keith,
It is about 6 inches at the widest point. The hole is about 2 inches.
These are really fun to make. I'll be making a few more in the future.
This one just sold.
this was part of my 'greek' series of vessels. It is a bleached maple vase with a greek motif reproduction. This was originally a round picture. Notice how it came out an oval - but I admit it still...

This is a picture of a hackberry vase which I engraved a rim on as an accent.

Well, wood is indeed some of the most forgiving materials and you can get away with a little bit. But, you'd be surprised how well the human eye can detect those small variances. Now I didn't think...
I'll field this one. The quick answer is yes you can do oblong material. The true answer is YES you can do oblong material BUT you may not get what you think.
The thing to remember is that the...
You know, at the core all the laser engravers out there are basically the same. You indicated you have an Epilog. I think they make a great machine (and I see their DFW rep every year at the shows)....
You know, sometimes it's just easier to buy the kits rather than make them. Take pens for instance. I use to make pens, but considering everyone and his monkey is making them these days, the price...
wow! This is really neat.
Now before I stick my best pair of jeans into the laser,
Are you engraving directly onto the denim material and at what
power level and speed.
BTW, I think an apron...
Well I guess great minds think alike. I've done the same thing and rigged a portable dust collector to the laser. It does a pretty good job, but as with most dust collectors - it is LOUD. The guys at...
