I have done just what Ira described. A lot cheaper than special fasteners. You don't need to drive the shim shingle in very far/hard - your goal is not too raise up the sub-floor, just to get a good...

The box looks fantastic! Beautiful wood and very nice, clean miters. I can't make out the etching, but I am sure that looks great, too.
Any tips for how you got the miters so clean and tight?

WOW!!! I love the combination of cherry and carbon fiber. The design is elegant and beautiful. The carbon fiber braces flaring into triangles on the back make me think of organic branches supporting...
That looks fantastic! The only problem that I can see is that the bear is so cute, the little one will keep trying to turn around to see it!
That is very cool!
It Bugatti built a rocking chair that could morph into Santa's Sleigh, I bet it would look a lot like that.
Nice job for a great cause!
Wow!!! That is truly spectacular.
If you have any pictures from the build; I, for one, would love to see them.
You mean there's science involved in adhesives?!?
JK! It is so cool that we are able to get such great information on this site!
On a completely non-technical note: I will +1 HotStuff. I have...
That table looks fantastic and is sure to be enjoyed by many generations.
The mortises/through-tenons look perfect, as far as I can tell from the pictures. For the legs, it looks like you cut...
That is a fantastic upgrade - well done!
The compound angles on the stairs really look great! It is hard to picture, but I think that I would install those balusters. Do they have compound cuts?
+1 for what David said, although I had to look up what cartouche meant (oval with a horizontal line at one end).
If the intended recipient says "Da Bears" a lot, then probably the wrong design :)....
Looks great! I can almost smell the paint :D
There was a timely thread not too long ago about screwdrivers. After reading it, I realized mine were pretty much shot. I splurged on a Wera Kraftform Kompakt 25. Expensive, but very comfortable and...
Family Handyman had an article about building an arched bridge, years ago. They did their own glue-lam beams. Hey, I just search for it (using: family handyman bridge) and found a PDF file on-line....
Jeff,
The trick, as near as I can tell, is to have minimal play in the axle, while still allowing it to spin smoothly. All my "first generation" toys ended up with broken axles (except one I made...
You can use Jasco wood preservative (Copper Clear) or equivalent to extend the life of your cedar posts. Soak the post ends in the preservative overnight and they will wick up a lot of preservative....
Just don't get cocky. I used my Craftsman RAS (first stationary WW tool) to rip for months before having a big kickback - wood had a slight twist. No flesh damaged, but punched a hole in the garage...
Michael, if you do decide on getting a new drill, you might want to consider getting a drill with brush-less motor. Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee, and more all have 18/20 volt brushless drills available....
Wow, more great work!
I am having a hard time seeing the problem that you are describing with the hip lines (not that I have ever roofed an octagonal roof and would know what to do). But, a detail...
Looks great! I never would have guessed that wainscot was maple. Looks more like cherry in the pictures.
Carl,
For the plywood, I suggest that you use either marine plywood or MDO (aka, sign board). Both are made for outdoor use; neither should experience delamination (assuming that you maintain a good...
Hardboard is usually smoother than plywood, which might be why it is called for in this project.
I would look for tempered hardboard, which will resist water damage much better than the untempered...
Fantastic work! I really like your creative touches on the cupola. Are you going to match the lattice design of the cupola on the lower part of the gazebo?
I also like your cantilevered...
I have had good luck with glue traps (intended for mice). They seem to catch EVERYTHING. Just don't step in them.
Oh, and they are non-toxic.
I used WD-40 and fine grit (maybe 400) wet dry sandpaper on wood blocks that just fit in the slots on an old Grizz. I even made a T-shaped block, to get every corner.
Then a lot of sweat.
