Thanks for the great suggestions! I like the idea of grinding a flat below the flute, and will be trying that soon. Sounds like a good solution,
I use the Oneway Vari Grind setup to sharpen my bowl gouges. Most of my gouges are ground to either an Ellsworth swept back profile using the Ellsworth jig, or a 40/40 profile using Ron Browns jig....
This is fascinating to me, that there might be such an inexpensive and simple fix to my problem. I'm not real well versed in electrical installations........is this something I can do myself, or...
I am looking into this option for my Oneida 5HP Smart Dust Collector. The factory supplied remote system on these units is not robust or reliable. I am on my 3rd remote transmitter/fob set in 6...
This is an interesting idea, and might work for me. I'm going to look into it.
thanks to all for your replies!

I am setting up a new shop and looking for the best way to contain chips from flying all over the room. I used shower curtains on rods suspended from the ceiling to create a booth in my last shop,...
I have had the same issue with my Oneida 3 HP Smart Pro. I will be interested in learning more about other solutions since I'm guessing the Oneida will fail again.
Update on this issue: Yesterday Brent from Robust graciously reached out to me and offered the following possibility:
Since you’ve confirmed the inverter is not tripping out, I suspect it’s the...
Eugene, thanks for that thought. A couple years ago Brent at Robust sent me the new pendant assembly because the original one was sticking as you note. Since then the switch has performed flawlessly....
Tim, it's a dedicated circuit. The only other 230/240V machine that runs while I'm turning is my dust collector, but that's on a separate circuit.
Bert, thanks for the idea. Do you know which connections I would check for looseness? Are we talking about the leads at the motor, or at the VFD, the on/off switch or all of the above?
Well, again I thank you all for the thoughtful input.
After several days of turning with no issues at all, again today the motor started tripping out on a fairly hard maple burl. When this happens...
David, thanks for the links. Yes that is the drive in question. I hope to find time this weekend to troubleshoot the issue and will report back on my findings.
Thanks again to all for your input.
Reed, mine is the two-pulley setup and I'm on the "low speed/high torque" setup.
David that is a good idea. I do have a clamp style amp meter but would need to construct a line splitter for 240v ac. I may give that a try. The other way would be to set the vfd to display amps and...
415533415534415535415536415533Roger, thanks for the reply. I have attached images of the maple burl that tripped the VFD today, along with some of the tools I use and my grinding wheels. I have 6 CBN...
Allen, thanks for the response. I tried that, and while he was cordial, he was more interested in getting me to take lessons from a mentor than discussing why the VFD is tripping out. I have to...
Jeff, thanks for the response. Yes, I've tried all the re-setting, turning off, etc. Not sure how to check my 220 V circuit though. I have found the issue to be sort of random, but usually occurs...
Hello all,
I am turning with a Robust American Beauty with the 3 HP motor. It is fitted with a Toshiba VF-S15 VFD.
After turning hundreds of bowls in the past 4 years, recently the drive has...
I have a Baldor (don't recall the model #) with two CBN wheels on it, and really like the setup. If it was me, I'd grab it and not look back......
I follow John Keeton's method for most bowls, but occasionally will also use custom made donut chuck in lieu of vacuum. Rarely use Cole style jaws, but when that is the best tool i use that as well.
I have both size Robust J rests, plus their inside bowl rest. I use one or both of the J rests on almost every bowl. For my money, if you can only get one now, I'd get the J rest.
Thanks for the input guys. I may try John's idea of using a scraper; that sounds interesting. The need for a large compressor has been holding me back on the pneumatic ROS route. My pancake does...
I have been using a Milwaukee angle drill with 2 inch pads. Seems to work fine for me. I've been wondering if the pneumatic random orbit style sanders do a better job of removing sanding marks on the...
