Walker turner machines uses Proprietary bearings that are VERY hard to find. This size does not have a alternative bearing that you can buy that will work in their machines. I ran into this restoring...

Cherry lends itself to twice turning.
Thread: Robust Comfort Rest versus Nova Modular tool rest (17 Replies, 2,555 Views) by Dueane Hicks
The Nova rest is no where near as tough as the robust. Mine gave way as the weld broke. They are probably ok on smaller lathes and sizes. I have several of the modular box rests and they are good.

Thread: Vacuum Pump for Lathe (6 Replies, 2,837 Views) by Dueane Hicks
Another vote for frugal vacuum pumps. I just keep mine in a old 4 drawer file cabinet right next to the lathe, with the drawer open when I need to plug it into the vacuum chuck.

Thread: Oliver 159-A Wood Lathe (3 Replies, 2,369 Views) by Dueane Hicks
I had one back in the 90's. Good lathe, but the lowest speed is a bit high on those reeves drive olivers. Built for commercial use in pattern making
Thread: Hollowing/Steady rest question (13 Replies, 2,740 Views) by Dueane Hicks
I also use the Oneway bowl steady. I may try two of them for a bit more control on hollow forms.
Thread: Bandsaw Buying Advice (24 Replies, 5,376 Views) by Dueane Hicks
I would suggest a bi metal lenox blade, as they last much longer and can be resharpened several times with a cheap diamond grinding sleeve on a dremel. Those so called "turners blades" seem to go...

Thread: is this a decent buy for $100? (12 Replies, 1,922 Views) by Dueane Hicks
Be forewarned: Walker turners have bearings that were discontinued a long time ago. Finding them can be quite an ordeal, not to mention, about 50.00 per bearing.

Would anyone mind putting up a link to a good floor mat to combat bad feet and a sore back?
Thread: face shield (4 Replies, 1,220 Views) by Dueane Hicks
I have had bionic, sellstrom and a useless bubble type face-shield from craft supplies. Then I tried this one (Lincoln electric omnishield pro) I found the quality is much better than any of the...
Thread: Green wood bandsaw blade (13 Replies, 2,307 Views) by Dueane Hicks
Just be careful using those made for green wood blades as they are grabby. Always use a jig when cutting round stock on it's side. I got a surprise more than once using an aggressive set blade. In...

Thread: Homemade laser or video for mcnaughton center saver (8 Replies, 2,539 Views) by Dueane Hicks
Has anyone come up with their own video, or laser system for the Mcnaughton center saver? I've been using the Oneway easy core, but wanted something that could get blanks from a whole mess of burl I...

Thread: Sanding belt for sharpening (4 Replies, 1,890 Views) by Dueane Hicks
I use 120 as a general sharpening grit on the sorby proedge. Ceramic seems to be the only thing that holds up to high speed steel. 60 is good for shaping. You have to be careful not to burn the steel!
Thread: Signing my bowl using a laser (15 Replies, 6,186 Views) by Dueane Hicks
very nice; I wonder how far below the laser itself that it will work? For large or deep bowls.
