I built a picket fence this year. The pickets were cut from air-dried pine sold as "board-and-batten", for siding.

The wood sat in my basement workshop over the winter after I milled it...

My father in law was in exactly this situation, and he used a heatgun to strip off the paint. It preserved all the old very ornate wood but it was not easy work.

I think he rushed it a little...
