If they are really fifty years old, they are almost guarenteed to be high carbon steel.
Bernie,
I have a P&N detail gouge. Mine is mounted in a Keltron handle. I've had it for at least a year and am very happy with it. I'm sure yours will give you good service.

How about another approach? Can you drill the banjo out to 25mm? Seems a whole lot easier and less risky.
Don't bulldoze it. That is what dynamite was invented for. John could be the first person to reach the moon without a space ship!
I'm going to be the guy who disagrees! I don't think this is a good turning project. Of course it could be turned but it won't look as realistic as the picture of the finished item.
And the...
Sounds like you have had a good life and it seems it is only getting better. Nice to have some facts to go with that picture.
Bernie,
What did you use for that white cushioning material? I often use the Oneway Mini-Jumbo jaws to finish the bottom of the bowl. But I'm just finishing a natural edge bowl and it won't fit...
Chris,
If the show in Charlotte is anything like the one in Philadelphia a couple months ago, Lee Valley won't be selling anything. They will display a whole bunch of stuff and will take orders...
Ed,
Congratulations on the new lathe. I think you will find that it does everything you want it to do. I run mine on 110 volts too and have had no problems. Don't forget to send a picture of that...
Mike,
Do you do anything to neutralize the white vineger?
Do you know how long the cranberry color lasts?
I started the thread because someone in another thread was talking about...
Couldn't be! Andy doesn't smile.:) :D ;)
Since it seems to be improper (or illegal) to copy the article on coloring purpleheart using acid, I will try to paraphrase the article. To give credit where credit is due, this article appeared in...
I found the reference to treating Purpleheart with acid. It was in an article in the Spring 2004 edition of American Woodturner. I'd be happy to scan and post this one column article but don't know...
Ken,
I haven't seen the Michael O'Donnell book but the Keith Rowley book is excellant. But use it as a text book or guide, not something to read while watching TV.
Take the book into the shop...
I recently bought a Nova DVR. I compared it with two other lathes with roughly the same price. One was the Jet 1642 and the other a Oneway 1224. The Jet was just too large for the space I had...
Lookin' good Mike! A great box and outstanding grain match.
Congratulations!
Ken, have fun with that thing. The idea is to keep the smile on your face!
I think we had you confused with all that airplane stuff.
Just keep an eye out for a great, big dump truck full of shavings. He will be looking for your house.
You cannot believe the logistics...
When the lint filter in the washing machine is full of wood chips.
Well you could send them to me. And I won't tell anyone and you could forget all about turning! NOT! You are hooked.
I read some place (and I can't remember where) that you can wipe a mild acid on Purpleheart and it will turn a cranberry color. Not some really dangerous acid but something readily available.
...
Dick, that is really nice. I like the soft, warm light on the inside. Seems to glow. How big was the log that it came from? And, can you teach my DVR to make things like that? :D
Hang on to that piece at least for a few months. Every time you look at it, look at your current work and you will see how far you have progressed.
BTW, those High Carbon Steel tools should be...
Glenn,
I got my DVR at the same time as Carole. I think there is something wrong with mine! It does not produce the same quality of work that hers does! :) :o
The Oneway 1236 and...
