I don't think it helps prevent warping or cracking. IMO end grain pieces are less prone to warp or crack, they will "move" some but not as much as face grain pieces. ...

LOL, yep sometimes a good whack is all it takes.
Sounds like the brushes were stuck and that "whack" knocked them loose.

My thoughts exactly. Really light colored for "Black Walnut" unless it is mostly sapwood. Could be "English Walnut" I suppose but I have no idea what that lumber looks like.

Moisture actually "triggers" CA glue to set.

Cotton wood and Yellow Poplar are both members of the Populus genus.
That said, Poplar is pretty soft and not very rot resistant. It does take stain well, and is easy to mill. With a good sealer on...
