And here I am in St. Louis with a 314 area code--
You have something there, but I've had moments of 'want' trumping 'need'. I'm moving toward being over that.
Got an E-mail from Blue Spruce/Woodpeckers just now--20$ off on a set of six of their Optima butt chisels, and they're still over a hundred bucks apiece. They're beautiful, and I almost went for it. ...
Derek is as usual, well researched. BS is shameless in their pricing.
My go-to sharpening guide will remain the Veritas MKII.
I have free-handed my sharpening for a long time, but I must admit...
I don't use sharpening guides much; that's why I have three or four of them. That being said, when Blue Spruce sent the E-mail about their new sharpening guide, I ordered one. A couple of months...
Wicked good steel. If there's an option for it in an order from Veritas, I pay the two dollars.
Custom 7. I've got a 7 1/2 LN bevel up that I'm fond of using. Truth is I've got WAY too many planes, but--
Here's a very late comment: I had a little business 35 years or so ago going around to cookware stores with my oilstones (Crystolon, India, Arkansas) in a bag, sharpening knives folks would bring in....
I got a notification yesterday that the Veritas jointer plane I ordered in March has shipped--looking forward to seeing/using it.
I see the post from the man who ordered Logier rasps and isn't hearing anything back from them.
I ordered a plane from Lee Valley on March 2, 21. When I check my account, I see that certain parts...
Thanks, Rafael. I hadn't encountered the term.
Thanks, Jim. Your photo illustrates exactly where mine shines. I bought a LN #1 last year thinking I wouldn't use it much. Now it lives in my apron and finds its way into the work much more than I...
Pardon my ignorance, but what's a donkey ear?
Whose saw is this?
All my working life, I've had the old Stanley planes my grandfather used, a 3 and a 4. I've used them since I was a little kid. I've got his #6 as well. I'm sort of with the guy who says he reaches...
Gary, bring me up to speed; what show are you talking about? I'm in St. Louis.
Wow! Thank you for putting us on this man.
Thank you for your broadminded generosity, Erich. I've been soured on at least two forums because of my fellow members expressing views that made my stomach hurt. We live in interesting times.
They probably are. I never sell youth short; it's what they're exposed to that I was talking about.
I think that's a nickel rod. I've used them (years ago) with good results on heavier material. Not sure I'd try it on a plane body. I like the previous comments about brazing and heat control. My .02.
Horrifying, but not surprising, given the mediocre standards of education that prevail in our culture--
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Jim, your post could have been written down to the very words (with the exceptions of the gasoline preference and wife asking what color it is) by me. My 21 year old F360 developed a bad oil...
I did just that, and for the same reason. Supplers like LV who mix excellent products with care for the customer don't show up every day. Here's the story from my end: A friend of mine who was in the...
