Updated pics. I've been trying to upload some pics, find it challenging sometimes. Progress has been slow, the weather is still not cooperating. I am pushing the contractor to get moving.
The difficult thing about relocating, particularly in NC, is that almost all new homes in subdivisions have HOA's. Not to start a battle of the good vs. bad of HOA living, but if you don't fit into...
So we moved again to a newer house with less property and no workshop. So now I must start over again with a new shop. No HOA but some covenants, mostly a brick front. At 71 years old I decided I...
Unless you have a special need, don't make them very deep. Thing will tend to hide in the back, never to be seen again.
I'm in the process of building a new shop, we moved again, and I stumbled upon this dust collector. I know the filter bag is not going to stop the fine stuff, and it's not a cyclone, but at 71 and a...
That redefines snipe.
Store it outside, under a roof of some type. Use a tarp to protect it. Most wood dealers don't store their wood in conditioned space.
For anyone planning on this type of project, this is an excellent stair jig at a fair price, in case you don't want to make one; ...
Good job, looks great.
I like the idea of flaring the ends out slightly, it will give you a little more "meat" so it won't look so delicate.
First, that style volute is no longer available as a standard item. The fact that the cap flows into the rail section has to be hand carved. It's a shame that the builder bolted the volute to the...
I have to agree with Grant, what type of joinery are you using? It would appear to be none. You may need to rethink you construction methods to avoid situations like this in the future. Plenty of...
I would also go with birch or beech, they were popular woods used in balustrades that was easy to stain to make look like other woods. They also held details well and turned and sanded well.
You need a piece of landing tread. Cut the rug back and glue down a piece. If you need to lower it a bid you can reduce the thickness of the tread section to 3/8".

30 years in the stair business and I have never seen a riser sit on top of a tread.
That's just standard base cap. All flexible molding companies will sell that profile. Kerf bend the 1x4 or whatever the base is and cap it with the flex. Why would you want to make more work for...
After the first boat, he mentioned that he was looking for a new shop. He built the second one in the same shop, so maybe he finally found one and is moving. Just a guess.
Yeah, I agree about maybe moving too slowly. That really is not an aggressive cut for that bit unless the bit has been compromised before and has lost it's edge.
I sure miss the shows from years ago. They were absolutely amazing. Lots of small vendors with things you didn't normally see. Big vendors with demos all day long. Plenty of quality stuff to spend...
I have this Bosch sander and think this may be better for your need. It's a great sander, but I wish they had a 5" version;

Why would you think you would want to leave a gap? If you are thinking expansion and contraction, your treads shouldn't move in that direction. The only danger of making a tight fit is if you make...
I've built a lot of chairs and a lot of steam bending of chair parts. Your steam generator looks a little small. This is what I used; I never built a box, I always used schedule 40 pipe. If you...
I know this thread is 12 years old, but to answer Jay's question, no modification is necessary for the Laguna ceramic guides.
I assume you never did French Polish.
