It definitely looks like an over zealous repair job based on the knot in the last picture that looks to be the center of it all. Still pretty unique grain pattern and I'll make something out of it...

Finally got this cut into slabs. As we got close to the trunk it was pretty nice still so we made a couple more cuts and the entire thing is in slabs now.
I have it in my basement and will put...
All depends on what it looks like inside of course but I'm hoping to get a couple round end tables, some cribbage boards with the side parts of the the burl and although I don't have a lot of...
Thanks Scott. I hope to get it milled in the next week at the most and I will get it set up outside.
This is red oak. Pic is after it was cut

Scott,
Larry suggested waiting til spring. I'm the one who detailed my plans for cutting the burl from trunk down rather than what you suggest. I pictured setting up some sort of craddle for it...

Larry, Do you thinki it is a big benefit in drying time to do this? I'm not really in any hurry to use the wood. Even though it is on family property, it is far enough away...
Thanks for all the input.
I'm going back out to inspect it tomorrow, didn't have more time than to take the picture before. It is either oak or maple but I'm going to say more likely oak.
I...
Looking for some experts on what I should do with this burl. The tree is still up as shown. I want to dry it properly. Probably going to want to get 2" slabs out of it. Cut first then dry? Dry ...
Thanks all. I'll be sure and post some pictures once I get it harvested and start on it. Starting a new job Monday so it could be a while.
I'm new a turning and came across a 4"-5" diameter tree that has a 10"-12" almost perfectly round burl surrounding it. (kinda looks like a meatball speared with a big toothpick) Although I'm new at...
Look's like it was worth the wait! Love the center piece on the cover.
I built my own jig to hold the box at 45 degree to the router table and ran the whole thing through to cut the dovetail spline slots prior to rounding the sides. I rounded the sides by running it...
Bill,
I'll show my ignorance here a bit but what do you mean by "through DTs". A DT joint as opposed to splines?
I welcome the criticism as it's really the only way I'll get better because from what I've been reading, the crit comes with a tip to do it right. Besides, I can only take so much from my...
Go for it! Might not be able to tell by the pics but I took an orbital sander and used just the edge at an angle to 'indent' both sides so when it is grabbed, it is like a 'handle'.
Marc
I would have liked to see the lid handle with an angle or rounded to match the side.
The dovetail splines look a little off with the rounding of the sides. maybe straight splines would look...
Thanks Greg. I can't take much credit for the design as I lurked on these forums and the web for some time getting ideas and learning what I needed. Took what I liked and put it together. Wish I...
Well first project in a very long time (35 years or so) is finally complete without a day to spare for Mother's Day. Carribean Rosewood with African Mahogany and Spanish Cedar inside. Learned a lot...
Yes, the oils in rosewood will interfere with the drying of oil based finishes. You will have to strip the finish off and start over.
Thanks Howie. Did this on a...
I'm just finishing up my first project (jewelry box) if you don't count what I did in shop class 35 yrs ago. Caribbean Rosewood with BLO then spray shellac then realized that my wife will keep this...
Thanks everyone. Mark's right, better get going!
Thanks. Couple good burls on a tree behind my house I want to get to so need to get started.
I would like to start getting into turning as I now have access to a lathe. There's a lot on the internet but I think I'd like to have a reference book. Can anyone recommend a book that will give...
I tried what I think you are referring to a screwsert and broke two trying to get them installed because the wood was too hard (walnut and maple) and I did not want to make the hole any larger for...
Any finish you put on the cedar will seal in the smell, which defeats the point of using cedar.
Thanks all,
Confirmed what I thought. Time to get moving on this project. I'll be...
