First of all, welcome! The people here are great, I have learned so much from people here.
That bench looks great! Awesome leg vise - way to save money on that expensive hardware. Nice, solid,...
Thanks for the great feedback, everybody. Wow there is a lot to digest here. I will probably study aspects of frame dimensions a tad bit, but really just go to building pretty quick. Being early in...

Thanks for the kind words guys!
Dave, Good luck on your toy chest - projects like these sure are a rush (literally and figuratively!)
A few more pics - the bottom, with my initials and year burnt in.

Well, the box I've been working for 3 months, my first non-shop project, is finally done!
I finished the box with blonde shellac and a few coats of wax.

Thanks for the continued advice everybody - I really appreciate it.
I got the shellac to build a film by just dumping it on there every 20 minutes or so - whatever the shortest time it took for...
Thanks for the tips everybody.
Not to highjack my own thread, but - Chuck, don't give up! That is why I began freehand honing, and once I got the hang of it, I've never looked back. And I am not a...
That looks wonderful, Michael. Nice to see beautiful projects like that built with handtools; gives me hope!
When needing to put a new edge on a roughed up skew blade, what does everybody use?
I am getting a cheap slow-speed grinder just for the rough initial bevel, and need to figure out what I'm going...
Thanks everybody for the tips.
What happens if I start to see drips etc when building? Do I need to wait for it to dry enough to sand, or can I keep building until it is all a film, and then take...
Hi Ruston, I'm using a 1.5 lb cut and sanding with 320 grit paper between coats...should I be using a heavier cut? I'm using 1.5 lb cut because I am brushing it on, although in future projects I hope...
As part of my trinket box project, I'm doing a raised panel top in pine, and thus have some endish (25 degrees angle from back) grain showing. I'm using shellac and have put on probably 10 coats on...
Hi All!
Well I've had some to time to do the next step on the box: carving my neice's initials in the top!
I learned how to do this through FWW #187, "The ABCs of Letter Carving" by T.J....
Greg,
I'm sorry to say that I can't find the link that I stumbled upon earlier that indicated that problem. I hope I didn't throw too much of a wrench into your plans...perhaps try searching this...
Thanks for the continued info...
As far as I can tell, Lee Valley has stopped selling "Space Balls"...another forum said it was because they left stains.
I wonder how did the folks who made...
Well its been a while since an update...I've been toiling on raising a panel with limited tools. I finally got something acceptable, but still a little rough:

Thanks for the quick and informative replies, guys!
Tim - do you mean a pin going down through the rail, into the face (bevel) of the panel? Or a pin going into the side of the bevel, through the...
Hi all,
I'm making a frame and panel top for a box I'm building (see http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=65979 - more pics will come soon). I'm just using handplanes for this - no router...
Just thought I'd post some pics of my progress...
I put the grooves into the sides using a Record 44 plough plane, with a wedge of wood in place of a lost blade calmp. I put a 1/4" wide, 1/4"...
I finally got all my groove/panel dimensions straight.
I've left about 1/16th extra in the groove for expansion/contraction of the bottom.
However, when I've rabbetted the bottom, I didn't leave...
Incredible tutorial. Thats gonna take a while for me to digest. Thanks Bob!
Bob that bed is beautiful. Congrats on finishing it! I hope to graduate to larger projects like that with hand tools someday. I'd be doomed if I let my wife see your post, she'd want one too!
Thanks Robert. I plan on using a plough plane for all of this. The reason I am concerned with the absolute depth of the groove is just to keep it from being so deep that it makes the piece weak, or...
