You might want to look at the Vector Scaling feature in the driver. You can find it in the Manual Control Driver under the Vector Tab....
Beam splitters are not a perfect 50/50 split. Some can be as much as +/- 5% on each side of the split.

PPI (pulses per inch) would be your horizontal pixels - the higher this number the more times the laser will pulse. Image Density is best described as how many lines per inch vertically....
You might also try slowing down your speed to see if the quality improves. That should help the lower case 'g' and all letters that have similar descenders and ascenders.

You might also try using a 70% grey instead of pure black. It tends to spread the laser pulses out a bit and reduces the chipping and scaling that you sometimes see on glass.
