Grinder question
How much run-out is acceptable in a bench grinder? I have an old 6" grinder that has almost no (.002") run out when the shaft is turned by hand, but if I push on the shaft perpendicularly to the axis of rotation the run-out increases to about .01"? Does anyone have an idea what the run-out on a new grinder, say a Rikon, would be? Thanks. -Howard

I am not sure that it really matters. You have to true the wheel anyway. I do not think the cast bore in the wheel is that accurate either.

One of the drawbacks to shaft runout is the side of the wheel will have some wobble. The bigger the wheel diameter the bigger the wobble. It usually isn't a problem unless you're trying to do delicate hand grinding.
