I'm using sherwin Williams opex lacquer based paint on some vanities I just built and I'm not sure wether I need a clear lacquer top coat. I have a friend who uses this product and always top coats but it seems unnecessary to me. It also seems to me that if the piece ever needed a touch up, not having that top coat would make for an easier repair. What do you guys think?
I don't think you need to over coat it with clear, but I'd read SW's literature or give them a call to find out for sure.

I personally do a clear top coat over a colored laq finish. Reason being, once installed if the customer happens to bump the product and cause damage there is a greater chance that just the clear coat will come off, making the damage near invisible, and keeping the color intact underneath. Since the color usually goes unharmed, this make for an incredibly easy touch up. Just grab a laq bomb of the same sheen and a quick sand/topcoat and it's good an new.
