My first few CNC projects on the Axiom Pro 6

Very nice! Looks like you're getting a really clean bottom on those trays and pockets. What bit are you using?

Thanks guys. On the bowls/trays I used an Amana 46170-K and 46180-K compression bit. Don’t ask me why but it’s what I used. LOL

I often use compression bits for pocketing on smaller things so I can reduce tool changes and go right to final cutouts, although for large pockets an up-cut for most of it with a full depth final pass with the compression cutter makes for a very clean end-result. Of course, that last part only works for things where the bottom corner is sharp. If it needs to be have a radius, then a ball nose pretty much has to be used for the perimeter.

That also looks very nice, Greg! It's sometimes difficult to cut a serif font and keep the little pieces whole without chipping, so good job on that.

Did you use a 1/8" bit on that? What feed rate?

On the name plate, Yes, it was a 1/8" bit and I went very slow. Around 35 ipm I think and shallow passes. Still cut pretty fast since it was small. The first attempt in cherry broke the letter S. So I switched to this other wood with tighter grain. Store told me it was Desert Ironwood but to me the grain looks more like some sort of palm. Very fibery looking. Not sure what it is, but it held the letters much better.


On the tree I also used a 1/8" bit but don't remember feed rate. I do remember it took forever as I had to run all of the interior as pockets to get it to turn out right and it took forever. LOL
