Disassemble the guard spring assembly. Check to ensure the spring pins are correctly aligned. Inside the assembly are flats onto which the spring pins seat. It may be possible that one of the pins on the tension spring is seated incorrectly which is resulting in excessive tension. It is a simple device, you should have no difficultly reassembling and troubleshooting once you see how it operates.
