When I sense that, I merely supply soft praise. As a China expert, I used to have to deal with Chinese officials who would say that America was so modern and they were so backward that they needed "frank criticism, so that they could improve." That was just a formula and I would answer with another formula... "We have so many areas where our countries can help each other."
I do think that when creekers identify themselves as beginners, they should receive mostly praise and encouragement, with very mildly worded hints at improvement.
Frankly, most of the bowls I see on this forum are great and much better than the mediocrity I produce, but one day I'll muster the courage to post some pics, only to prove that I do work at the lathe.
