Summer's almost over--so what are your fall/winter woodworking plans?

I can't believe this coming weekend is the last before Labor Day Weekend. I have a huge todo list with a few woodworking related items on it. First and foremost is building a maple dresser for my daughter to match the bed, table, and bookshelf I've built the past few years. We want to give that to her for Christmas just over 4 months from now.

Also on my list:
- Finish the rebuild of a 1965 Powermatic Model 30 belt/disc sander
- Rebuild a early 40's Parks Planer
- Kitchen counter redo
- Rebuild one of our kitchen cabinets from the usual 2 doors & 2 drawers configuration to one with three wide drawers.
- Crown molding and an under-cabinet wine bottle holder for the kitchen.

Maybe a new entertainment center too if we end up getting a new TV instead of just buying the digital converter box.

Oh, my...the list is long, but here are a few:

• Tack Box for Nastia
• Bedside tables for both Nastia and Alesya
• A side table from the beautiful English brown oak I bought from Hearne for the purpose awhile back
• A media cabinet
• A buffet like table with shelving under it for books to go in the great room
• I should really finish the Nakashima Mira style chairs I started back in 2003... ;)
• Finish the wall cabinets for my new office that go over the credenza
• etc, etc, etc...

All the projects that I currently have started and get sidetracked from completing..... - is that not everything? :rolleyes:

In reality -

-Cedar-lined chest for my daughters birthday
-Finish the Drying area for my walnut stash
-Get the rest of the walnut and apricot slabbed out
-cabinets in the mud room
-a toolchest with some of my cull cut collection
-finish the walls on the utility trailer
-three picture frames
- ...........

It never ends - which is fun!

I'm building a walnut blanket chest for my daughter, with her help. At the rate I get time in the shop I'll be astonished if we finish it by Christmas!

Oh, my list is endless. This is most of the stuff I remeber.

-Finish a full basement
-10ft built in/book shelves/tv entertainment unit
-2 columns to go around posts
-laundry room cabinets
-Fish tank stands for 13 tanks, 3 stands total
-10ft wall of cabinets for "the fishroom"
-Hang a full kitchen
-Trim out the house
-Build a full set of furniture for bedroom.

I think thats it for now. Between school, side jobs, work I WILL find time :D

Bloodwood, Tulipwood, African Mahogany, Cocobolo, Jatoba, Macassar Ebony, Gabon Ebony, Goncola-Alves, Padauk, Birds Eye Maple, Bubinga, Wenge & Yellowheart, I have a bunch of Oak, Walnut & Maple up in the loft.... We'll see what the season brings...

My list is long as well.

- Finish current fireplace mantle project
- Build an ocassinal table out of the insane solid walnut and waterfall bubinga veneer I got at Hearne a while back. This one is for my mom so I definitely need to finish that one.
- Wife and I started on a bathroom remodel last weekend so there is quite a bit of case-work there.
- Built-ins for the family room
- I plan on finishing a few humidors that I have started. I almost had them done until Bill Wyko had to go and spoil everything by posting those magnificent humidors he has been building. Now I need to hop them up or I can't even call mine humidors. :)
- This all needs to happen before spring arrives again as wife and I plan on building a new deck.
- Oh, and the kids need desks for school work and, of course, they need to match the other stuff I built for their rooms.

Build the remaining 9 dining room chairs and finish all 10.

Rearrange my shop; sell the Jet Contractor saw and Jet DC. Replace with an Oneida 3 HP Gorilla and a 5 hp SawStop.

I'll be a happy camper when the above is finished...then a walnut corner cabinet built after Lonnie Bird's antique copy and a walnut jewelry cabinet for my wife.

My spring and summer has been consumed with a fairly extensive house remodel project. Good news is the "butt work" is almost done.

This fall I will building the vanity for the bathroom. The intent is a bowfront vanity in the Art Nouveau style. Woods will be Curly Peruvian Walnut and possibly cocobolo, or domestic walnut that has been ebonized.

Preliminary plans of what I'd like to do are probably too long to go into.
What will actually get done, well this little . sums it up!!!

hmm.. lots of things i would LIKE to do, but no clue how much i will actually achieve:

-build closet in hallway dead space
-refloor living room, hallway and entry rooms
-paint living room walls/ceiling
-take down wallpaper in kitchen
-expand our garden (need more space for plants!)
-put a small stone pad next to the shed to store the smoker on

er... maybe if i am lucky I will get to start on end tables and a wall table for the living room, and a new coffee table.. will see

Adirondak chairs and table
New Bed for us.
Adding a seat for the picnic table for megan.
Working on reorganizing the shop!!!

Am presently working on a non-woodworking home upgrade right now (3x5 walk-in shower) for the upstairs bath. Probably late this fall I'll start on a new kitchen for LOML. Will either be in quartersawn oak or pecan, we haven't decided yet. I have enough of either air dryed and waiting to go to the kiln.

I will also be finishing some built up trim on the interior windows and doors. I did a couple a while back, just to see how we would like it and now its time to do the rest.

somewhere I got the crazy Idea that I wanted to make my mother in law an inlaid serving tray. Unfortunately her kitchen motif is grapes and vines. Anyone care to guess how many 1/2" circles of purpleheart veneer you have to cut to make a bunch of grapes! It's not going to be a pretty site.

My project mgr hasn't prioritized my list yet. Loft bed for my son is at the top tho.

I just completed installing about 800-1,000 ft of oak crown moulding. Followed that with tearing out about 3-400 sq ft of ceramic tile in the kitchen, hall, eating, and utility area and installing 3/4" oak flooring. Tearing out the tile (which was over concrete underlayment which was over vinyl which was over mahogany underlayment). This was the toughest dirtiest job in a long time; but, it's done, new floor looks great and on to other projects.

Next project is plantation shutters for my wife and daughter. Daughter spoke up first. Hers will be made from poplar rails and stiles, possibly basswood or poplar slats - will be painted. Ones for our home will be from oak.

I've been doing quite a bit of research on these including Norm's CD. The current thought is buying a moulding machine so I can make my own slats and use the machine for other things. Also, trying to decide on purchasing a dedicated mortising machine or going the router and jig approach for the mortise and tenon joints (a new modernn router would be nice).

The shutter project is worked in with duck hunting - afterall, duck hunting only comes one time of year.

Up till the mis December, I am making some xmas gifts. Sorry - can't tell yet as you never know who is listening....

Come January, I plan to finish a rocking horse.

When that is done, I think I will go wood shopping for something bigger.

Have not decided yet.

It's all fun...

Mine is pretty simple: Start and finish a toy box.

I figure I'll be lucky to get it done before the new year.

Hmmm, Matt, We are ONLY 2/3 of the way through Summer... But, you are right - many things might have to go either unfinished, or not done, until Fall, or maybe even Winter. Oh, the price of (partial???) retirement... :D

The list is huge. Being a professor, I thought I would get more done during the summer, but in all actuality, I did little to no woodworking this summer -- my labor was dedicated to the 250K investment, writing a book, and research.

Plans:

1. Hire undergraduate labor to help me finish insulating/drywalling my shop.
2. Hopefully start the bed I have planned for my son. As far at that goes, it will be done before the changing table I started for him three month before he was born.
3. Make new storm doors to install and replace the junk that is on the house.
4. Maybe sleep a little?

I sort of agree with Al, winter for me starts in January. This is fall and hunting season starts in 2 weeks. I may think about woodworking for the next 4 months, but won't accomplish much. The lure of the woods overwhelms the desire to be productive!

When I can get more focused, I hope the next real project is a walnut/maple secretary. Time will tell.

To build what I want to build and to hell with what everyone else wants.

Considering that my woodworking list from last year was about 10 items long and the 1st item is still unfinished and sitting in the shop, I'd best be modest with my plans for the Fall/Winter/ Early Spring of '08-'09. Having said that, My goals remain lofty.

The decision was made toward the end of last winter that our garage/ shop will become a fulltime shop.:D. This gives me tingles. It also means more work. I would like to start building shop storage, an outfeed table for the tablesaw, stuff like that. Now that the shop can be a little less mobile, a redsign is in order.

I hope to complete the ever lingering diningroom hutch/buffet/ sideboard thingee that remains in the shop. Still one door, finish and hardware to go. Once it's out of the shop, I plan to build an identical piece, except with an upper china cabinet along with the hutch.

I should leave well enough alone and just be happy if I get that far. But I really would like to build some sort of bar back cabinet to go behind the bar in the family room. Something to house bottles, glasses and potentially either the beer cooler, a mini-keg tap similar to a beertender, or both.

But I'm not ready to park the camper and give up on the summer quite yet! We have camping plans into October. I'm not ready for indoor fires yet. Still have plenty of outdoor fires to build!

I'm starting out my fall by attending a seminar put on by the San Diego Fine Woodworking Association the middle of September. It features Robert Lang, a world-renowned expert on arts and crafts furniture. He is the author of many books on craftsman furniture. He has published articles in all the major woodworking magazines and he is currently a senior editor of Popular Woodworking magazine.

After that I have a few tables, etc. I'd like to finish for our new home.

More importantly it looks like I'm about to get the building permit for my new 24' x 40' shop/garage building. All I need now is the O.K. from the fire department. All the plans have been accepted by Building and Safety.

A lot of similarities in the entries so far. Mine's not much different.

Finish my three year old entertainment center project I keep putting off.
Finish shop remodeling and cabinetry.
Figure out a better tool organization system other than pile it all on the workbench.
Bookcases for the kids.
Desks for the kids.
Learn to turn something besides sawdust.

Oh, and all the assorted home upkeep jobs that seem to eat so much time.

Well at least it won't be 100 degrees.

I think I will try and get to

-- Kitchen table for our new house (Cherry)

-- Blanket Chest (Aug '08 Woodwork Magazine)

-- A Krenov-inspired humidor for my father-in-law

-- Hack-inspired sideboard

-- Wall mounted tool cabinet for my growing collection of hand tools

-- Oh yeah, clean my shop when the weather finally cools down

Right now I'm in the process of building a 10 foot sailing dingy. Just today I started laying out and cutting the parts for the hull. The spars are finished.

Projects on the list of things to do are:

Mahogany, walnut and oak jewelry box for the wife.

A cabinet of drawers to fit under the workbench.

1) 4-panel Shoji screen to divide the office from the livingroom.

2) 25 Plantation Shutters. (Did I mention I'm in the market for basswood?)

3) Doesn't really count as woodworking, but an entertainment center. I'm ordering the cabinets from the same outfit that did our kitchen cabinets so the kitchen and family room match. An easy -- but expensive -- "screw it to the studs" solution.

4) Cherry writing desk, end tables -- stuff for the hallway.

5) Panel the walk-in with cedar and trick out the closet.

6) A workbench. (Shopnotes #84 design.)

7) My favorite (but more masonry than anything else) -- a BBQ island.

Jewelry chest for my daughter, tool chest for me, front hall table for SWMBO, mission side table for family room, dining room ceiling fixture, wall mounted tool cabinet for shop, maybe a couple arts & crafts table lamps. I should keep myself occupied.
