To John's point, there was a problem over the last year or so with third party "Nova" adapters causing runout and other issues. Be sure that you have a real Teknatool adapter.

Not to add confusion but the device that goes into the chuck made by the chuck manufacturer is generally called a threaded insert. If you are only going to use your chuck only on your 1642, get a replacement 1 1/4 X8 insert that fits your chuck. I bought a spindle adapter so I could use a 1x8 chuck on both my Jet mini or my PM3520. A quality spindle adapter costs more than a Teknatool chuck insert while a PSI spindle adapter is close to the same price. I felt it was easier switching back and forth using an adapter rather than constantly swapping out inserts.
Here's the link for the PSI adapter http://www.pennstateind.com/store/LA11418.html It's well made, but it does add quite a bit of distance between the chuck and the spindle (thus increasing the possibility of vibration). I would definitely NOT recommend using your chuck in reverse with this adapter! DAMHIKT

Its all good, I just wasnt aware the insert was removable. It all makes sense now, many thanks!
Ken if you decide to go with a spindle adapter rather than a chuck adapter I would recommend getting it from "Best Wood Tools". I suggest the AD-202-2MT. It adapts your 1-1/4"-8 spindle to 1"-8. Not only that but is has a through hole for adding a vacuum chuck and the through hole has an MT2 taper so you can still use MT2 drive spurs. When I got my 1642 I initially went with the PSI adapter but I thought the run-out was excessive. No such problem with the "Best Wood Tools" adapter. I regularly switch my chucks between my 1"-8 Griz and my 1-1/4"-8 Jet. Something to consider if you keep the smaller lathe.
I have no affiliation with Best Wood Tools other then purchasing my adapter from them.
