Grain filler and hand planing?

I’m idly thinking of future projects, and it got me thinking. If you have a project that you want to use, say, crystalac clear grain filler on, and you’re trying to avoid the dreaded orbital sander, how do you go about it? It seems to me running a smoother over dried grain filler would be gross.

A card scraper is my tool of choice.

Also consider only using the filler after final surface planing. That way you fill any tear out etc.

Not sure that's a good idea. It's not like bondo and using it to fill tear out could easily be a problem over the years. It's only made to fill tiny wood pores. Having tear out in the first place is not acceptable in my shop.
