I'm wondering what the purpose of the small metal plate at the back of many cheaper commercial zero clearance throat inserts. Such as :https://www.toolstoday.com/media/cat.../s/tsi-sjb.jpg
It makes some sense as a strengthener on inserts where the riving knife slot doesn't go all the way to the back, but I don't understand the intended purpose otherwise....
On the Saw Stop which has a similar looking insert, it is a synthetic material to tolerate the pawls. These are not cheap but are commercial ;-)
I’m pretty sure you’re on the right track in that it’s a reinforcement. That part on my jobsite saw seems to be of a spring steel type alloy. Without it I’m sure the crappy insert would of deformed and met the blade a long time ago. Just my guess though
Without them you can't pull out the insert.
