Lot of the old books suggested beech , cuz it was plentiful and cheap. None of them suggested rosewood, mahogany, or the finest of anything.

Patrick, most of the dowel plates are just too thin. Get a piece of scrap steel that is at least an inch thick, drill holes , champher.
