I've got a DF bench top, 2 3/8 thick, made from 3 x 6's salvaged off some window trim on our house. The wood is about 50 years old and it is hard...

Nice looking plane and it sounds like a good user. I suspect the tote is a replacement, as it doesn't look to have the same degree of craftsmanship...
