    Hi Jerry, I haven't tried getting any wood from the city of Phoenix, I get most of mine from a tree trimming/removal company. They know the kind of wood I'm interested in and the save the bigger pieces for me. I'm not actually in Phoenix, I'm in Wittmann (between Surprise and Wickenburg).
  3. Al, I don't see where the current screw lenght is an issue.... I turned a 6" od log with bark on. I turned my tenon and then turned it around to turn out a natural edge log. I didn't have a problem. When I designed this CP, I originally used a piece of solid 4/4" maple, and of course a maple tenon. The OD was 5 1/2"..... After a couple turnings later, I noticed that there was a crack forming at one of the outer screws. I decided to go to Baltic birch for both the tenon and plate. I also cut my od down to 4 1/2"..... I turn a lot of stuff that have no flat spots at all. As long as you have solid wood (not bark) to set the screws into, there shouldn't be a problem. If you chose to make a CP, make it larger in OD, add another ring of screws and use #12 or #14 screws if you want them longer.. I've broken pretty much all the #8 screws, and since I went to #10's, so far I haven't broken any..... . Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.. Jerry

    Hi Jerry,
    I'd like to try and adapt your "porcupine style faceplate" to use with natural edged bowls and platters. The twist would be having some of the screws adjustable (extendable) to hold the curved blank at it's best angle. Do you think extending screws further out from the faceplate (adjusting for the curved workpiece) would create any problems?
    I like to turn natural edged platters and shallow bowls from waste cut-offs I get free at a local sawmill. The slabs are the initial outside cuts made on a log - usually 2inches +/- thick.

    Jerry, That wasn't me. I haven't seen the website either. When I started on Wood Magazine forum and my name was da Yooper. I think there is another form Woodworking Talk that my name is still the da Yooper. I learned all about Yoopers, Trolls and Cheese heads when I went to Michigan Tech '80 through '84. Trolls are people from Lower Penninsula of Michigan - they live below the Mackinac bridge. Cheese heads of course are from Wisconsin. The difference is Yoopers and Cheese heads are proud of of their nicknames. Trolls are not happy with their nickname at all.

  7. Alan, I'm 63 years old, sprayed a lot of lacquer, and feel my brain looks like and is the size of an English walnut, but can't find nor remember what I wrote to you. I don't have a clue, but if you refresh my memory, I'll cooperate fully.hehehehe
    Congratulations on your acorn shell piece being displayey in WOW.
    I've got several pieces that are in desperate need of some epoxy or resin treatment to make them a completly round piece without voids, and that blue really does look good.
    My question is, does the epoxy or resin shrink and expand at the same rate as the wood? I'm asking because they use rebar in concrete because of the compatibility of their shrinkage rate. It seems to me if you had a lager void, if the wood went from a very humid area to a dry area like Tucson, the wood would shrink away from the epoxy, and leave cracks... Since you have a whole lot more expereince than me, I'm sure you've encountered that question before.......Jerry.
