When I was working we could get the 13 ply birch in a lot of sizes, up to 5'x12' but I believe they just called it "Russian birch".

I just installed the same hardware. It left 7/8" under the doors with the doors being 2" shorter than the opening. The bottom pivot bracket installs...

Since you can't get a bit in the collet. If you have a set of drills see if you can get a fractionaly smaller drill in the collet and then strike...
