I just got feedback from Garrett who watched me sharpen, saw my 1 chisel with an issue and advised me. I sent him pictures yesterday . He thought I kept my stones flat and knew what I was doing and said there was a problem with my chisels when manufactured. Although he did not suggest this, perhaps I made things worse because I did not deal with the problem as some advised but for what I paid for those chisels I expect to not have to deal with a problem.

I'm "Mr. Mom" to a 14 year old and 11 year old, both in new braces - my shop time has vanished.

I wish to encourage generous souls like yourself.
Some of us are grateful for your efforts, on our behalf. The endless rehash of essential topics is a natural cycle in open forums.

It's why people like me move on.

    Best regards,

Kudos on your sharpening post. You're more patient than most. In large part this endless wrangle is why I no longer openly engage in fora.

The excellence of your furniture should end pointless whinging about what obviously works.

FWIW - my copy of Leonard Lee's sharpening guidance stands the test of time.

All the best to you and yours,
    Jim from Massachusetts USA
  5. Derek, I keep reading that you've written a review of at least some Veritas bench planes (maybe LN's too?), but I've yet to see a link and it doesn't appear to be in the Rwviews stickie. Where might I find it?

The prototypes still had LN casting marks on them, it was a simple betrayal by the Woodcraft management. When I learned the sordid truth of this from one of the LN staff, I was outraged. That product line lent credibility to the Woodcraft name. Now, they're a nicer version of Harbor Freight.

This sort of malfeasance should be exposed for what it is, but large companies have legal staff to punish small challengers.

Thank you for the links to shooting boards. I find them to be very informative. I agree the the Lee Valley LA jack makes a good shooting plane. I've added a hot dog handle to my list of things to do.

Derek, so sorry to hear you feel the need to change the way you were doing the great reviews on tools from Lee Valley and others. I guess people can so small minded at times. With regards to certain recent "plane" posts, look at it this way, at least you have a whole career of experience dealing with "children" to draw from. The rest of us aren't as lucky! Thanks again for all your hard, honest work. Callan Campbell
