About David Somers
- Biography:
- I have been an IT Specialist with the US National Park Service for many years, working at National Park units in the states of Maine, Virginia, Arkansas, Oregon, Washington, the Pacific Islands, and in Washington State in our Regional Office in Seattle. NPS IT folks tend to be generalists and we work with Local and Wide Area Networks, cabling systems, switches and routers, large Voice over IP systems, and on down to desktop computers and user level tech support. Typically there is just one or two of us in an office or area and we do it all. A bit scattered, but fun and varied too.
Before that I was a Law Enforcement Ranger with the NPS until I used an entry level IT position to make a move, intending to get back into the Ranger field afterwards. I found I enjoyed the IT work though and have been doing that since 1985.
I retired in Jan of '15, and I hope to really immerse myself in my love of woodturning and make that at least a semi paying hobby. I also hope to have more time to enjoy all the things the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Especially the amazing coast line we have here up through Canada and into Alaska!
After a long time reading and poking through the forum and asking lots of questions in an effort to learn as much as I can I finally got a laser and CNC from China. I have been having fun learning how to operate both and exploring the ideas I had for them. Pretty exciting and a nice adjunct to my love of woodturning.
