About Alex Useted
- Biography:
- My main background is in technical direction, carpentry, and welding for theatrical scenery. I always enjoyed working on the more challenging scenic units, and pretty quickly started watching all relevant woodworking shows on PBS. I always wanted to have a chance to work on my own furniture projects, and frankly never found the time and space. I've long had the basic tools that I used to build scenery, but with a move and a higher paying job, I'm fortunate enough to finally have an 11'x8' spare bedroom to use as a woodworking studio, and have been adding some finer tools to my kit as I build my workbench and some other small projects. It's largely a hand tool endeavor, but I do use a circular saw, drills, drill press and a router when I need to. I admit that I miss the faster progress I enjoyed while working in a scene shop, but I'm learning, honing my skills, and appreciate the relative quietude of my hand tools and being able talk to my wife in the next room while I work in the studio. I've yet to figure out what my style is, but it's a long journey, not a sprint.
