So I have had my lathe since March. I looked and saw that people were filing the spindle so their chucks fit against the shoulder. I did that and now I have noticed a lot of wobble. I called Grizzly and they are shipping a new spindle. I am worried that I may have cause this issue and if the new spindle comes in and the chuck wont fit I am afraid I'll mess this one up too. has anyone else had this problem?

Geez.....sounds like you did something wrong. That is such an easy fix. What brand of chuck are you using? It may be your insert that is inducing the wobble, unless you took way too much off your spindle boss.

I have a supernova 2. I filed that thing down a good ways. I kept stopping and checking fit. Maybe I had wobble all along and the filing made it worse. How hard is it to replace the spindle Would it be possible for someone to give me a measurement from spindle to top of shoulder. I want to know how far i actually went. Thanks

All it takes is .0010” which is just a smidgen off the metal. Now, Nova chuck inserts have known to be wobble inducing if they are not seated all the way in the chuck. If it ran true before you got this lathe, then perhaps it has come loose a little. The tiny red leather disc protects the threads from damage from the set screw. If you are new to this turning thing, then you might need the assistance of an experienced turner who has mechanical knowledge.

Well its not off by much. I just checked it. I bought a new insert and the new insert wont fit over the shoulder. Maybe I should look towards another chuck. Quality control does not seem to be the best.

You are not the first one to experience differences in inserts. I own 5 SuperNova2 chucks....2 of them are different diameters in the inside shoulder. I think they must have a “range” of tolerances, and they are too broad.

There has been a lot of trouble with people buying the "none" Nova inserts at outlets like WoodCraft. At least a few years ago the run-out from them was high.

Ralph is correct....numerous reports, especially the ones from WoodCraft. I think it was their Wood River inserts, but I have also heard reports on the forums of some Nova inserts with issues as well.

I ordered a Nova Titan direct thread. Maybe that will help. I want to make sure its not the chuck before I mess with changing the spindle. My shoulder measured 1.235. My Nova inserts measure all over the place.

Jeremy, just to make sure that you are filing the right surface, let me go through a couple of things. All you should need to remove is 10 thousandths of an inch total or 5 thou all the way around (x2). Not much. You are removing the material on the circumference (like making a wooden spindle smaller) on the area behind where the grub screw goes.
The alignment of a chuck on a lathe is determined by the wide flat at the back of the spindle end coming in perfect contact with the back of the chuck or faceplate. Like two pennies being pressed together. It is those flats that determines whether or not your chuck runs true. So, whatever you do, don't file the flat on your spindle, just the outer circumference of that area. If you left a bur, it is possible that it could affect the lock-up
