Well, we had the Virginia Symposium this weekend, and there was a vendor there with a Robust American Beauty and a Scout model. Before pulling the trigger on my G0800, I was actually saving towards an American Beauty. The G0800 really caught my eye, and I began doing lots of research on several models, and had turned on a friends AB a couple of times.

When at the symposium, and carefully looking over the AB, my decision to get the G0800 was reaffirmed all over again. The G0800 is heavy duty in all respects, and I just like the ergonomics better, as for me, it just fits what I really want in a lathe, and is a joy to turn on. I’m glad I made the decision I did...as it’s right for me. The Robust AB is a very fine machine, and one can’t go wrong with it, but the G0800 is in that high eschelon of turning machines available....one can’t go wrong with it either!

Good to know you like the lathe. I am getting closer to pulling the plug on an upgrade myself.

What lathe are you thinking about as an upgrade?

If one researches Harvey Industries, they will find that Harvey is producing some of the worlds high end woodworking machinery. Some of the most innovative advancements also. They make the Powermatic lathes, and also the G0800 for Grizzly. It is comparable in class/size to the PM4224b, only has some more advanced features, and some of the best quality machining I’ve ever seen on a lathe.

I was watching the wood whirler on youtube; he has a G0800 and likes it. He did say however the paint is terrible and is very rough, and peeling off in some places. I'm wondering if anyone else has ran into any qc problems? I am thinking getting one myself.

Dueane...I’ve not seen any lathe that when used hard has not had some sort of paint chip. That WoodWhirler guy [I’ve watched a few of his youtube videos] seems to lack in some skills I think are necessary to be a great turner. He uses scrapers most of the time, and is all about doing modifications to suit what he likes, and that is fine, but I’m not sure I trust his perspective a lot. The G0800 has as good a finish as any Powermatic, better than most Jet lathes, and a paint chip is nothing at all in normal useage. You can get touch up paint for any of Grizzly’s machines if it matters a lot to you. Paint on castings will always cover casting voids etc on any lathe that is a cast frame. You will be surprised at the quality of the G0800....its machining is as good as any lathe I’ve turned on, which are numerous makes...at least the one I have is that way!

Continued - I’ve had my 0800 for over two years, put a lot of big heavy wood on that thing, and it has had its share of abuse, and it still looks good, runs like brand new, and impresses me every time I turn a project on it. The thing I have to watch for is when I finish projects while on the lathe, is to make sure to cover the bed with something like an old towel, or piece of plywood so that drips of the finish do not get all over the lathe.

I bought my G0800 in august of 2016 I am very happy with it and have not had any trouble with it well worth the price. I considered buying A roubust AB but went with the Grizzly instead glad I did.
