I'm working on a homemade set of Vicmarc 18" Adjusta-Jaw Set for finishing my bowls and I was wondering if anyone has done this before? Im gonna use steel that will be machine cut out and it will be used on my Vicmarc 120. My jaws will be 20" closed and open to about 21.5". My goal is to have the compression range be over to inches Any ideas or tips?
Make sure you put more holes in for your rubber buttons, so you can use it fot more sizes than those you mentioned. Rubber buttons and threaded screws in tapped holes can give you a setup like Cole Jaws you see available commercially. Parts should be available at most hardware stores. If you google “cole jaws” you will see a pic of what I am speaking to.
I stole an idea from Dale Larson. You take those jaws and attach triangular blocks of wood (say 8/4 or 12/4 thick). Then turn those blocks to match the bowl you need to reverse, that way you are grabbing them around the entire rim, and not just 8 points. You can either turn the recess to match the inside or outside of the bowl, and set the angle to match the slope on the bowl. We've found that this a much better way to grab a bowl then conventional "cole" chucks, or Longworth chucks. Dale even uses this method to reverse turn his oval bowls, allowing him to have an oval foot.
I got it done but its not perfect... here is a link to my instagram if anyone is interested... https://www.instagram.com/p/Bdathgkg...=10x10_turning
