Well it finally happened to me, the pot went bad. Luckily I had purchased a couple of them in advance and gave one to a friend at the turner's club. I replaced the pot but now I can't get the lathe to power up. I tried tracing the power wires according to the wiring diagram in the owners manual to no avail. I cannot find any loose or disconnected wires. Any suggestions would be welcome.

    Thanks

What do you mean that you cannot get the lathe to "power up" ? When you press the green start button, does it push in and stay there? The RPM display should show 000. Does it? Then about 1 second later, do you hear a subtle click?

Jay if you follow these instructions you will have no problems.....its what I did when I replaced mine.

Jay, if you have a voltmeter, and know how to use it, you may want to measure the voltage across the two outside legs of the pot when the power is on. It should be about 10 volts DC. The center of the pot should have a proportional voltage depending on the speed setting (that is somewhere between zero and 10 volts).

But keep in mind that there may be some higher voltages on some of the parts - - especially the green power button.

But first, I would be interested in your response to my earlier question. Perhaps in the process of moving the wiring around, one of the wires to the power switch slipped off.

Brice, I think you may be right. The space inside the headstock is very limited. I have suspected the same as when I turned the lathe on, there was no power ( lights etc. ). I haven't had time to check it out further as the wife has been sick and I'm not spending any time in the shop. I hope to check it out further in a couple of weeks. Thanks for your thoughts.

Brice, I had a chance to go out to the shop today, I do have a volt meter but didn't need it. I spotted the problem right away. You were right the white wire ( power wire ) had slipped off the switch. I replaced it then plugged the cord in , turned the lathe on and it powered up. The connection was loose so I unplugged the Griz and tightened the plug ( crimped it ) .

It's interesting that sometimes one can overlook the obvious.

    Thanks again
