shaft turning on tailstock

My tailstock shaft where the numbers are for measuring has started to turn as I tighten the hand wheel so I hold on to it while tightening.

Before I take the tailstock off and flip it over is it even something that can be fixed or is there another way to fix before I go that route? It seems to be getting looser.

    Thanks

After looking at the schematic on the grizzly site, do I maybe just have the quill lock lever too loose and it's not engaging the slot that runs in the quill? I'm assuming that's the only thing that keeps that from spinning. Can't really see a whole lot of anything else in there.

Sam, yes, it sounds like that's what's happening, so you've probably solved the issue by now. And if the lock lever pin isn't in the key slot, it can score or gall the outer surface of the quill. To adjust, make sure the lock lever pin is engaging in the slot, then tighten until it bottoms snugly. Now back it off just enough that the quill can advance and retract smoothly when you turn the tailstock wheel.

It's usually best to lock the quill when spindle turning, once the workpiece is mounted. Just don't forget to unlock it before trying to retract the quill to remove the piece when done. (Of course that's never happened to me.)

I can't remember, did we have to assemble that when it was new or did it come assembled?

Regardless, you'd think they would have put in a bearing or at least a replaceable bushing for that shaft. It's all pretty basic. I took it apart and cleaned the threads and bore of the casting then re-lubricated everything. turns smoother now anyway.

I think David gave you the correct advice. That screw must be extended in the groove, but not bottomed out, almost to the point it touches. Do always use the tailstock lock lever…that’s what its there for! :-)
