I've been following this group for some time and decided it was finally time to jump in. I have been a hobby woodworker for 30+ years. About 15 years ago, I bought a used Delta Rockwell 46-111 lathe. It is good for spindle work and I made a number of furniture legs with it but mostly, it just sat in the corner of the workshop. One day, I tried to turn a bowl with the Delta lathe. That was a disaster. After a lot of research, I found that I had the wrong technique, wrong tools and wrong lathe. Fortunately, I also found a good woodturning club about 8 miles from my house.

So after months of research and study, I decided to upgrade my lathe. I bought the Grizzly G0766 based partially on what I learned on this forum. It just seemed to be the best bang for the buck. I've been using it for several months and I can now produce a pretty nice bowl.

The knowledge and tips I've gotten from this group has been invaluable. Thanks

    Robert

Welcome to the GGMG Robert. Like you, many of us members have the 0766, and have found it a really good platform for creating our projects. Glad you’ve been helped by the posts here!

My G0766 came with the 1" tool rest but I had to take a file to the spindle to get my Record Power chuck to fit. Easy fix. I've since ordered two Robust tool rests. Much better than the one that came with the lathe. I'm still learning and accumulating tools. My wife bought me a Oneway Stronghold chuck for Christmas. It'll make holding larger pieces of wood safer.

Next upgrade is some Thompson lathe tools.

Sounds like you are well on your way deep into the turning vortex, Robert. I have 6 Robust rests. I just hope you got a total height of 8-3/4” [bottom of the post to the top rail where the gouge rests]. That is what you need, which is called a “custom rest” by Robust, and not the “long post” rests which are 7.24” total height...too short to have much post down in the banjo.

Yes, I followed the advise of earlier threads and called Robust and special ordered the 8 3/4" posts. I got the 9" comfort rest and the bowl rest. They didn't charge any extra for the custom length. I just paid the long post price. I found the 12" Grizzly rest to be too long for a lot of smaller work. The casting on the Grizzly rest is pretty soft and I was having to touch up nicks in the top fairly often.

I've been kicking around the idea of a sand ballast box for the G0766. My only concern is that it will make cleanup a little harder.

Good deal Robert. Our turning club uses three 5 gallon buckets of sand on a bottom shelf for one of their Powermatic 3520b’s, and it dampens vibration well on the old wooden floor of the former elementary school auditorium, which is now a community center. Of course, the buckets have lids on them.

Welcome Robert. If you are looking to add weight, the way I did it makes it easy to disassemble. I took a 2x6 and a piece of plywood and fastened them together to make an L shape that spans length-wise across the bottom ledges of the lathe. I made 2 of these, one for the front and one for the back. I then ripped 2x materials to fill the bottom between them; just placed in there; not attached to anything. I made end pieces the same way to fit snugly against the inside of the legs, and just placed them in there loose. Place sand bags in this "box" and screw on a plywood lid (or make a cabinet to go on top). This way you can disassemble easily if you need to move your lathe and you have a shelf for tools (and shavings). You can get 4 60-lb bags inside.

I saved the Grizzly packing plywood for just such a project. I may try the buckets of sand to see how well it works and how much trouble it is to clean around before I commit to building a fancy shelf/cabinet out of the Grizzly logo plywood.
